How to break up old tile

My husband is going to retile our bathroom.  What's the best way to get the old tile up to put down new tile?  The tiles are about 5" octagons now.  Thanks!

Re: How to break up old tile

  • Are you taking anything else out?  We had/have the same tile and when we tore it out of our master bath, we started where the shower was (after removing it) and went from there.  A big crow bar helps, esp one that's a big longer to give you more leverage.

BTW ours was down with cement, a layer of metal mat and more cement, so it was a heavy job.

  • Our old tile was also on top of inches of cement. Since we were taking everything out, we just smashed the hell out of the tile with a sledgehammer.
