About a week ago a young cat (definitely under 6 months) came up to us in our backyard, jumped into DH's lap, and started purring. As cute as this sounds, we have three cats already, and cannot have more no matter what (we rent our house).
She is not chipped (we had her scanned) and had no tags. The humane society and local shelter have both refused to take her - the shelter said outright that they would take her, but put her down immediately, because they have too many cats.
She is so sweet, and is clearly domesticated. We contacted the one rescue in our small town, and they have no money to help us. Our budget is stretched as tight as it can go right now, and we cannot afford to get her shots or to get her spayed. We have struck out with trying to get vets to help. Right now we are considering her a foster - we will keep her inside and make sure she is safe and fed until we can find a solution.
But I am running out of ideas to try. I have asked around, and do not know anyone who wants a cat. Any ideas?
Re: Stray cat (almost kitten) ideas?
It sounds like you've gone through a lot of options. Is there any way that a local animal shelter or rescue group would agree to list her on Petfinder or something as a courtesy listing? I see animals who are fosters on there all the time.
I'm sorry that it feels like all of the good options are gone! What part of the country do you live in? Perhaps the Pestie network knows of someone looking to give a cat a good home?
I would continue to Look for cat rescues who can help pay for vetting and cross post her. I would also call the local shelters and see if anyone can help with discounted vet care. If worst comes to worst you could start a chip in account for vet care and ask friends or community members to donate. Dh and I regularly foster kittens we find, get them fixed and vetted at the low cost clinic and charge a small adoption fee. We never recoup all of our money but it does help weed out the crazies.
