Organizing clothes and closets?

Trying to organize and PURGE some of our clutter in prep for a move. We have more clothes than any 3 people need. Any advice on how much we really need to keep?

Re: Organizing clothes and closets?

  • How much you need is an individual decision, but I start purging by getting rid of items we haven't used or worn in the last year. I also make piles of Keep, Trash and Donate. Start slowly just do one closet or room at a time, it can get too overwhelming if you try to organize the whole house at once. HTH.

Great advice, I was just going to say pull out anything you haven't worn in one year and then make some decisions on what to keep and what to donate. OP-You'll feel soooo much better when you clear out the clutter! GL!

This is exactly what I do.

  • I recently got rid of a lot of clothes because my husband thinks I am a border line clothes hoarder (haha I'm so not though!)  I started by taking out anything that I had bought years ago.

Then, things that I like, but just never wear.

And now I turned the hangers backwards in my closet, and anything I don't wear this season (3 months)  I will get rid of :) it's hard, especially when I get attached to the clothes I am sure I will wear "one day" but it feels good in the end and I have room for the new clothes I want each season!

  • I am in the middle of doing the same exact thing.  I have clothes that are pretty old, but yet I still hold onto because I think I will someday wear it.  I made a big bag filled to donate and then I have another small bag of clothes I am going to try to get a little cash for off of ebay or craiglist because they are still in good condition and one item even still has tags.  Looking forward to getting out the old and in the new!  My FI thinks I ave so many clothes but I honestly don't because half I don't even wear!
  • I made the piles... keep (stayed in my closet), donate (moved to another area/closet)... Kind of 'out of sight, out of mind' theory. If I really wanted to wear an item from the donate group, I wore it and moved it to the keep group. But when I went to the 'donate' clothes months later and realized that I not only didn't wear the clothes, I actually forgot some of them were there, the clothes were definitely out. I have done the hanger trick too... turn the hangers around and as you wear things replace the hanger the correct way and after a year or a season donate anything not worn.
