Super needy dog - HELP!

I've had my westie since he was a puppy and he's super attached to me.  He follows me everywhere, doesn't necessarily have to be ON me but I have to be in his field of vision or he will get up and follow.  We went on vacation at the beginning of the month and he was home with a house sitter, we typically board them instead of doing it this way so maybe the fact that he's in our house and I'm not there is causing this?

Anyway, since getting back from vacation, he is insanely needy, more than usual.  He has to be touching me at all times, or under my feet when I'm not sitting (I trip over him about 3-4x per week now) he whines constantly.  I try all of his favorite toys and he will play for a few minutes then he sets it down and whines.  I take him for a walk, he is fine for 30 seconds then whining.  If it's dinner time I feed him, he eats, and then whines.  I get tired early because of the pregnancy so DH usually puts the puppies to bed.  About 20 minutes after DH comes to bed, he barks and I have to go pick him up, snuggle him and put him back to bed and he will sleep through the night.  This is an improvement because the week after we got back he barked 5x per night, we tried ignoring and he will literally bark for hours.

What can I do to cut this out?  It's so obnoxious and nothing I do makes it stop!

Re: Super needy dog - HELP!

  • Every time he whines, you give him attention - he's learning that it works! You should start ignoring his needy behavior and implement some NILIF (nothing in life is free) training methods.

    Good luck!

  • You're right, I do tend to give in just to shut him up.  The nighttime one is hard but I'll try it tonight.

Just a warning: it will get worse before it gets better (extinction burst).

You will need to ignore, ignore, ignore. And up NILIF as much as you can. This is the perfect time to start getting your dog ready for baby.

  • Our dogs can be really needy when they're anxious.  Using nothing in life is free, following a set schedule, making sure they get lots of exercise and DAP collars have helped.
