I don't think Oscar likes C. :(

Things that we do with him, like playing a little rough, he doesn't care.  If C tries it he gets so annoyed. Is this something we can work or is this situation doomed?

I hate this.

  • I am pretty sure little kids don't know how to play rough with pets as adults do. She is probably really rough and that's what your dog doesn't like.  I would stick to petting for now.

  • Dog or cat?

Our dog likes G but there are limits. Like, I grab his fur around his mouth and shake it (muzzle nuzzles I'm such a loser) and so G sees me doing that and tried it. No go. I just don't do that in front of her anymore. We try really hard to stress gentle play. we give her treats to give him.

  • I think Buca and Peanut tolerate Jackson, but I don't think they like him(well besides the food he throws on the floor)

They are older and I think that has a lot to do with it, how old is Oscar?  I really think they just don't have the patience for him and lately all Jackson wants to do is sit next and cuddle with them.

They also pee on his stuff, still 19 months later so I think that is a pretty clear indicator they don't like him:(

  • Cleo - hang in there. Kids often haven't mastered the art of knowing when to play rough and when to be gentle with animals, and so they're understandably grumpy with them. As C gets older, Oscar will come around.

Peachy - Years and years ago, I used to have a cat named Buca (short for Sambuca)!

  • I think Henri just tolerates Gideon. She will let us do whatever we want to her but she just doesn't care for him. If he cries she will go into another room. I would just reinforce gentle play and being sweet to him.

  • Oscar is a pug, about 7 years old.

We will try to demonstrate gentle play for her and see how that goes. Honestly, she is not rougher than us with him, he just doesn't like it coming from her. :/

  • i don't think kids should ever, ever play rough w/ an animal; even if it's something like a firm, wiggling pet (lol, i have no idea how to describe it but i do it all the time w/ my dogs.) it should always be gentle pets, gentle touch. a kid doesn't know the anima's limit like an adult would and it's easy for a kid to be too firm or too pokey.

  • She is young. Teach her how to be gentle for now. Rough play can always come later if you feel it's appropriate.

I wouldn't worry about this if you're thinking of this is indicative of something bigger. She's small and makes sudden movements, it's weird to a dog. Plus, with the new baby he's probably trying to figure out where he fits in the pecking order.
