when to feed dog when traveling

We are leaving on vacation tommorow and will be driving 7 -8 hours. Our dog is coming with us and we have to leave first thing in the morning. I just realized that we always feed him in the morning. I have read it is a bad idea to feed them and get straight in the car but I also don't want him to be hungry. We are making a long lunch stop so I could hold off and feed him then I guess. Or should I just feed him in the morning? Any other tips for road trip with a dog?

Re: when to feed dog when traveling

  • Will you not even have a half hour at home in the morning?  It would be best if you could feed him, then let him outside or do a short walk before you get in the car.  But if he doesn't normally get carsick, then you can probably feed him and go.  We feed ours and get straight into the car all the time.  Of course we aren't in the car for 7 - 8 hours; in your case I would plan to stop after an hour or two (or whenever he seems like he has to go) for a potty break.  And I would plan a short afternoon water / potty / walk stop too, between lunch and arriving.

  • ILs dog gets car sick, so they hold off on feeding him until they get to the destination.  It's roughly a 6 hour trip, and he is good with just one potty break.

  • Unless your dog gets car sick then just feed him at the normal time.  We make 8 hour trips from S.FL to NC at least every other month (family) and Hilo eats when it's time for him to eat. We feed him early early in the morning, then let him go out to do his thing and also to run around and get his energy out before the long car ride.

If your dog does get car sick, just feed him at the beginning of your lunch break that way it will give him time to digest.

  • whenever we go on road trips we feed our dog the night before so that we avoid any accidents in the car the next day.
