What do you think of our selections?

We are working on picking selections for our new build. The only thing we have finalized so far is the cabinets. I have pics below of what we are considering.

The first pic show the back splash (it's in the top left of the photo - rectangular stones w/glass tiles), the tile (will be in the bathrooms - there is one off the living area), the counter top swab is on top of the cabinet sample (it's Caesarstone Baja) and you can see a little bit of the hardwoods. You can see the hardwood better in pic 2. DH is 100% set on those hardwood floors. Basically, if he gets those, I can pick everything else. What do you think?

Re: What do you think of our selections?

  • I like it! Your backsplash choice looks a lot like what we selected for our new build just over a week ago. I love the glass tile and stone look. Pictures in my blog, if you want to check it out.

Your cabinets also look a lot like what we selected for our bathrooms. The cabinet company we are using called the color "Ebony". We went with a lighter brown in the kitchen.

Your backsplash is very similar! I like your choices too!

I'm a bit nervous about my countertop selection. This is a closeup:

I love your granite choice. I looked at some of the tan color granites (we need to go light because our floors and cabinets are so dark) and I didn't see one that jumped out at me. I was also worried it might be too busy with the backsplash since the backsplash is busy. I have Caserstone now and have been really happy with it but didn't see a color that jumped out at me for the new kitchen...

  • Ooh, pretty.Your H has great taste in floor!

How is the lighting going to be in your kitchen? The only thing I would worry about is having dark floors and dark cabinets in a kitchen without much natural light.

I'm a total supporter of caeserstone, but with your other selections I would indulge my love of "granite with character" and go with something like this:image

I love tan granite with waves of pink in it. I don't think your backsplash is busy at all.

Either way, I'm sure your kitchen will be great.

  • I love all your choices.  Your door style and the color is very similar to what we put in our kitchen.  Our color was called "Java" and most of the time it photographs as black, but it's actually a very dark brown and we have dark hardwood on the floor.

We put Kashmir White granite in for the countertops.

I normally prefer the random look of granite to the uniform quality in caeserstone, but in this case, I think it works well because there's already a lot going in with the backsplash.

  • Love the cabinets, the HW and the floor tile.

Here's the thing about backsplashes, though: tile is permanent.  And, because styles change so quickly, tile can date your home in an instant.  Today's mosaic becomes tomorrow's fruit.

Look at this kitchen - if the backsplash weren't there, it'd be fine!  The cabinets have a lovely classic shape, the countertops are tolerable, but it's the backsplash that ruins it.

Go to Houzz and look at kitchens.  About 95% of them have a solid backsplash.  Mosaics have peaked and are on the downhill slide; I think they were most popular 2005-2007, maybe 2006-2008.

Choose a solid color and you'll be able to live with it for years.  It won't boss around your kitchen and you'll be able to put in whatever accents you want without having to compete with a noisy tile.

  • That hardwood is BEAUTIFUL. Great choices!

We selected a granite called Vicenze Brown for our master bath and we are doing the darker Ebony colored cabinets in there as well. At first, I worried it would be to dark but I think its going to be great. If you liked someone of the tan granite options, then I say go for it. I think your choice of Caserstone is very pretty and will go very well with your tile choice though too.

It's nerve wracking picking an entire kitchen from a little sample isn't it!

Yes, it's very nerve racking making the choices! I really hope we like the finished product!

We won't have tile in the kitchen - it's hardwood as well. The tile is for the bathroom (which is off the living area). I'm worried about the darkness because of darkish floors, and dark cabinets. I really haven't looked too closely at the granite choices - I have caesarstone now and it's so maintenance free and easy to take care of and I'm nervous moving to a granite and having to worry about stains and sealing it... I've never had granite though so I don't know what to expect. Nothing jumped out at me from the granite samples the designer had out - they all looked too dark, but maybe next time I'm in I can take another look.

That's right . . forgot about the hardwoods in the kitchen. I agree that the lighter countertops are nice option to off set the darker cabinets and hardwoods. I've never had either granite or caesarstone so I can't speak to the maintenance of either. I would say if you have had ceasarstone and like them, go for it. I think your choices look very good, but if you aren't sure ask them to hold off for a week and let you think about it.

I have a few weeks to decide on the countertop which is good! I enjoyed looking through your blog - it really is exciting picking everything out and I can't wait to see how your place comes together :-)

  • Thanks! It really is a lot of fun. It's good that you have a few weeks to make your choice on countertops. I meant to say last night too that I don't think a granite counter with movement will look bad at all with that backsplash. We have some friends with a tile backsplash and then granite (I believe they have tan brown granite) and it looks great.
