Any translators take the ATA exam?

I'm signed up to take the ATA certification exam in mid-May and was wondering if any of you have already done it. I'm not necessarily expecting to pass my first try and have heard that the grading can be fairly arbitrary, but I figured it's worth a shot since I'm here in the States and in Europe I'd have to fly to a different country to take it. I know you're not actually allowed to share the text itself, but if anyone has any tips or advice I'd be grateful! :-)

Re: Any translators take the ATA exam?

  • I haven't taken the test yet, but one of my translation professors was a grader for the ATA and he made a point to grade our translations the same way they grade the ATA exam. It was quite hard (actually had me in tears a few times after seeing translations I had worked hours and hours on, returned to me with almost every line marked...). I could dig up some of my work and notes from that class if you think it'd help.

  • Thanks, Gibby. The class I just took from NYU was taught by a woman who grades for the Canadian exam, and she also marked as she would for the exam. Of course it's not identical to the ATA, but pretty similar, I assume. Do you happen to know what percent is considered passing? I haven't been able to find that information online and our instructor didn't know.

  • I did my translation studies at NYU as well! :D

I don't remember the percentage. As soon as I'm done with my translations for the day, I'll check my files to see if I can find the info for you.

Did you do their online program or the actual onsite degree? I'm doing the online professional certificate, which is great since you can do it from anywhere.

I actually did both. I started online, then decided to move there and took a few on-site classes, and then continued online. I really enjoyed it.

  • I think it's a good program, too. I have one more class to take this summer, Medical, and then I'm done.

I really don't know what to expect with the exam (I originally wanted to take a practice exam, but by the time I decided to take the real one there wasn't time to do the practice one and get the results back before the real one, so no point), but I budgeted for a couple of attempts, so we'll see what happens.

  • Sorry, I looked through all of my files and couldn't find the info my professor had sent about the ATA exam. I think I saved it on a CD, but since I'm in the middle of moving, I honestly have no clue as to where it is right now. However, I did find several translations with the professor's grading that I would be happy to send over to you if you think it might help (you never know...). Good luck on the exam! And please let me know how it goes.
