Full House Color Advice

Any advice for going about deciding on a color scheme for an entire house? Feeling more than a little overwhelmed.

Re: Full House Color Advice

  • Choose what you love and not every room has to be in the same color scheme. That's just my opinion though ;)
  • Yes PP. Choose what you love. But I think that the "flow" from room to room should be there and that is typically acheived by using a consistent color repeatedly in various shades throughout. So your entry could be dark green walls and the living room next to it could be light tan walls with dark green accents. etc.

My kitchen is the center of my home, so I picked my area rug for under my kitchen table first and had that be my color and style inspiration for the rest of the house.

Find your inspiration first from a piece of artwork, vase, rug, pillow, or a keepsake that you want to display and use it as your framework to give some guidance in selecting the rest of your decor and wall colors.

Don't paint first and then backtrack to find fabric and art to suit. It's way more difficult this way.

  • We used colors from a patterned area rug in our LR as the starting point.  Collor #1 for the wall, color #2 for drapes and color #3 for accents (chairs and throw pillow)s

In the adjoining room open to LR - we use accent color # as primary color withcolor #2 for drapes

    Hall  - color #2

Bedroom #1 - used a color 2 shades darker than color #1 with color #3 as accents

Bathroom - Used a color 2 shades darker than #1 for walls and accents were #2 and #3.

Another technique is to use varying shades on a SW color strip as the primary color in different rooms.

You want flow - but it does not have to be super matchy-matchy.

  • I think houses look best when you stick with all warm colors or all cool colors and preferably in the same family--like different shades of just a couple of colors.

I think this is what's killing me, as we're having our home custom factory built, but it will come fully painted.  I think I might need to start shopping for bedding and decor, and maybe that will help me answer the paint questions.

  • I agree with xmaryrickx, but if you really want a whole house palette, there are a lot of articles like this online.
