Cat dandruff

kjewellkjewell member

Hey ladies,

I was hoping to ask the experts a question.  I have 2 cats.  One is 10 years and the other is about 3 years.  H and I just got back from a week long vacation.  The cats were left at home and we had family members stop by to feed/water/clean litter boxes.

At any rate when we got home I noticed the 10 year old has really bad dandruff (at least it looks like it) we have never had a problem with this before (he is black so it is super noticable).  It's like it just appeared at some point in the week we were gone.

Does anyone know why this would happen and more importantly how it cure it for the poor guy?

Re: Cat dandruff

  • How weird is this. I was just googling cat dandruff today, as my 8 y/o cat has it too. Grr. Only mine has had dandruff, and he hates baths, so a nice skin-soothing bath is a no-go.

So from what I've read, dandruff can be caused by a.) poor diet b.) some sort of parasite (mite) c.) climate changes (as in, cool, dry winters) or d.) health issues (diabetes was thrown around)

So unless your home was super dry while you were away, I don't know what could have caused the dandruff. Maybe give him a good brush (distribute the oils on his skin through his hair) and see if it doesn't improve in the next couple of weeks. I've also heard of putting a capsule of fish oil on the food for a dose of omega 3's.

I hope someone else has some answers for you (&me, too!)Stick out tongue

  • The house wasn't super dry but we did turn the temp waaay down so it was pretty chilly.  Our cats are all indoor so I suppose it could be possible but unlikely that they would get parasites (I'm assuming here correct me if I am wrong).

I have been brushing him the last couple days so hopefully that will help.
