Nikon D60- 18-55mm vs. 35mm prime lens?

Our Nikon d60 came with the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 AF-S lens, but many people seem to rave about the 35mm (or even 50mm) f/1.8 prime lens.

I know prime lens are a fixed distance lens, but will the picture quality be better shooting with it?

Also- how did you determine to get the 35mm vs. 50mm? When I use my 18-55mm lens, I tend to stay shorter distance (18-35mm)  so this is my reasoning to get the 35mm (vs. the 50mm), but this reasoning is half-assed to me....

Re: Nikon D60- 18-55mm vs. 35mm prime lens?

  • I've had a D40 forever and almost exclusively use my 35mm 1.8.  i love it.  Its great in low-light situations and has super sharp focus.  Do you shoot in manual?

I don't think the 50 (aka the nifty fifty) will auto focus on a D60.  It doesnt on the D40 which is why I went with the 35mm.

You should definitely post this on the Bump's photograhy board - - you'll get good response over there.  GL!
