Unwind (as in the YA book, not the process of relaxation)?

Has anyone else read this? I just finished it and want to talk about it.

It was fantastic but really disturbing.

  • I did! Totally creepy but great book!!

  • YES. The creep factor was high (I shuddered during the unwinding scene late in the book), but I thought it was very well written.

The sequel comes out in September and I can't wait.

    What's it about?

The premise is that - sometime in the future - there was a war between those who are Pro-Life and those who are Pro-Choice. To resolve the war, they reach the conclusion to outlaw abortion, but to allow parents to "unwind" their kids between the ages of 13 - 18 instead. Unwinding is the process of killing the children, but instead of seeing it that way, they see it as the children living on in other ways as 99% of the body parts are used as donations to other people in need of lungs, hearts, limbs, eyes, etc. The book focuses on 3 central characters who have been selected, for different reasons, for unwinding.

    It's absolutely fvckking horrifying.

despite the horrifying premise, I promise it was really good.

It WAS really well done. I still can't believe its YA though. It gave ME nightmares and I'm an adult.

I don't recommend this book to anyone because I mostly regret reading it (and I LOVE dystopian fiction and read every book that I can get my hands on!)....it was THAT hard to read. This one just stands out among the prob 30 dystopian books I've read that affected me so badly.

But by all means- if you think you can handle it, read it! It was well done! lol

I will say- the way they described how they got to the unwinding point was REALLY interesting. Thats my favorite part- the world building or describing what led them to these extraordinary- sometimes terrible- actions.

what other books have you loved? I have read a lot of the ya dystopian fiction, but am always looking for more!

  • It's EXTREMELY well written. I didn't find it to be too hard to read, but mostly because by the time it got to the really emotionally jarring material, I was already invested in the story.

The characters are particularly compelling, and the subject matter - although really awful to think about - is really interesting.

As horrifying as I found it, I loved it more than most of the dystopian I've read in recent memory.

  • Commenting for Jillian's list of must reads.

Although I wasn't a huge fan of the Maze Runner.

  •  I added a bunch to my wish list. Thanks!!

Yeah it wasn't one of my favorites either. My sister liked it though. Maybe better for the younger set? since it is YA and all lol

ETA: And I'm not promising all of these are good! Some were just okay. I tried to mark the ones I really liked, but I'll go back and make sure I noted the ones I loved. :)

I also was not a big fan of the Maze Runner series. The made up words really irritated the crap out of me for some reason. I'm still stuck on the third and will probably finish eventually.

I LOVED Delirium and Pandemonium. They're probably my favorite.

Lauren Oliver also wrote Before I Fall, which is a fantastic YA book, although not dystopian.

I LOVED pandemonium, thought it was much better than delirium. Looking forward to the third!!
