Running with your dog

We recently adopted a puppy and I hAve started taking him for runs. He's 4 mo old lab and almost 28 lbs. I love running with him and want to teach him to run with me. I may be posting in the wrong place, but do you think he is old enough? t's just a couple of miles a few times a week and not fast by any means. If we walk, we walk. But I'm wondering if he's too young or if I need to up his food intake/ do anything special. Thought?

Re: Running with your dog

  • Congrats on your new addition! I know your heart is in the right place (& simply for your sanity!! A tired dog is a happy, non-destructive dog!) But I believe word on the street is that you shouldn't run w/your dog till its atleast a year old. Im pretty sure running for exercise (as opposed to them just running in the yard/playing...etc) can maybe cause damage to their joints at this early stage in their life.

I think its great that you want to start running w/him, & teaching him how to run/walk w/you, but for now, I'd just walk him.

You could ask this on the Pets board too, Im on there too....I know some people can give the board a bad wrap, but the way you are wording your question prolly won't get you any flames :)

    GL!

  • Check with the vet, but I believe a year old is ok to start running with them. My dog is 9, and we're at the point where we also have to be careful about doing too much with him! Enjoy the little guy. :)
  • PPs had great suggestions - Check with your vet and the Pets board will have some great suggestions. I am pretty sure 4 months is too young to run with a puppy. Labs love to run, but they need some time to grow first. Have fun with the new pup!

  • Thanks for the input. I'll post on the pets board and check with the vet as well. He seems so happy running but I don't want to be the root of bone/growth problems.

  • Labs are larger breed dogs, and really should be "made" to run until about 2- when their bones are fully formed. At 4 months, he will probably get tired from 20 minutes of chasing birds and balls in your yard, or a brisk walk around the block. I did run with mine before they turned 2, but I stopped every time they wanted to stop, and if they were slowing down at all, we walked. We didn't do any long distances (over 2 miles) until they were 2. Get him comfortable on the leash- including good leash manners!- now, and running with him will be soooo much easier when he's bigger.

Another fun way to let him run and get worn out in the summer is it to spray a hose around the yard in a big circle, or turn the sprinklers on, and you will see how long he can hold out before he is just pooped :) Have fun!

Your goldens are adorable. I read an article and it seems he is too young. I don't know why it did not cross my mind until after the fact. Glad I asked.

Your puppy is adorable, by the way. Love puppy snuggles!

  • I didn't run with ours until they were closer to two years old.  Four months is definitely too young - your vet should be able to let you know when you can begin running with him.

I run with my dogs six mornings a week.  Having them as running partners is great!

  • My Wolfie is a lab mix, although he's only 42lb now at 15 months. I asked my vet last year & he said it was fine for Wolf to do a C25K program with me as long as I made sure he didn't get too hot.  Well summer hit & we both got lazy!  Ask your vet how much running, when, what surface, etc, is ok.  Honestly though, a little baby like that will probably want to play and frolic more than run.  Heck, Wolf & his golden retriever sister are both 15 months and still don't have great leash skills, although that's my fault.  I try running with our golden but I usually give up b/c she's too busy tripping me or trying to run after something.  I'm betting that you're vet will probably be ok with adding some short spurts of running to your walks now, but again see what s/he is ok with.  He's probably too young for a long run, besides, it would just frustrate you both to no end right now!

In order to prevent future health problems (hip dysplasia to name one) you shouldn't run with him until he is a year old. We have a 11month old lab puppy and I can't wait until she is old enough to run with. I know how frustrating the puppy energy can be. Any toy where he has to work for his food will help with the energy too.

     Cute puppy btw!
