How much will carpeting cost?

We will be carpeting two bedrooms and a hallway.  Without knowing size, how much should we expect to spend on a typical berber carpet?  (I will get probably two quotes, but just trying to come up with a rough budget).

Re: How much will carpeting cost?

  • It depends on so many things.  The carpet you pick, the padding you pick, the amount of work the installers have to do removing furniture, whether you pay for disposal of the old stuff...

I can tell you that I spent about $1600 for two rooms (13x18ish and maybe 10x12?  Can't remember) for the carpet and padding I chose, with us doing our own ripping out and removal.  But that number really won't help you.  Just go get quotes for your own space and choices.  I recommend getting at least one of those quotes from a local installer rather than a big box store.

  • We got a quote for a living room (11 x 17 feet) and a bedroom (12 x 12 feet) plus a tiny hallway (4 x 4 feet) and it was going to cost us $800 from a local installer for $1.45/sq.ft. berber plus the pad and installation cost.

We ended up ordering off-the-roll regular carpet from HD with cheap pad for the whole house (so an additional bedroom PLUS the right sizes for the other rooms -- oops) for just above that cost.

If you're staying put, though, I'd spend the extra money and get nice carpet. Our house is going on the market and this carpet, while cheap, should last about 5 years or so. If we were staying put, I'd have bought something nicer.

  • We called for some quotes when we were considering buying a fixer upper. I was a little shocked by the cost of new flooring to be honest. It would have cost us several thousand to do a majority of this new house and it was using cheaper products than we would have liked. I'd suggest calling around to some of the local companies for quotes.

    All of this.

Plus, a berber can require more carpet because they need to match up the patterns. I priced patterned berber for a project about a year ago and the cost was nearly double per yard as a frieze.

  • We just had carpet put in and while it wasn't berber it was a more expensive carpet from Lowes. We ended up spending double then what we had expected. We had 1050sq of carpet and pad installed by lowes and they removed the old carpet as well and it was close to 4k.

  • We are also looking into getting carpet estimates.  Obviously, yes it does depend on a lot of different factors, but one place gave us an estimate of $2-$5 per sq foot and that includes padding and installation.  At least that gave us a general idea of price to start off with.
