Tell me it's going to be okay

I did *not* feel any better yesterday and in fact, fought a fever all day and last night as well.  This morning, I am not nauseous and my belly seems to have calmed down, but I'm wasted.  I can only stand up/walk around for a few minutes before needing to sit.  I'm not hungry at all and haven't eaten since breakfast yesterday. I haven't run a step since last Thursday.  I probably should have stayed home, but had nothing ready for my classes so that I could do sub plans.

Please tell me that not running right now isn't going to adversely affect my marathon Sunday.  Please tell me that just a few miles tomorrow and Thursday and Saturday is going to be enough.  I didn't work my azz off for the last four months to have it all go down the tubes because of a stupid stomach bug.

Re: Tell me it's going to be okay

  • Rest, rest, rest you will be completely fine.

The important part of your training is done.  The important thing right now is to stay healthy for the race.  Do not overdo it in this last week.

  • not running will not adversely affect your marathon on Sunday.

not eating will though, try to start choking down some calories.  you do not want to go into sunday with a calorie deficit.

  • From everything I've read/heard, you should be fine! If it makes you feel any better, my plan (also for a Sunday marathon) calls for only 30 minutes of running on Wednesday and 20 minutes on Friday, at a nice, slow, relaxed pace.

  • I know it's hard to convince yourself of this, but it will not affect you AT ALL. It WILL be ok. I run better on fresh legs. You might find that your body will actually enjoy the rest. With a stomach bug your main concern needs to be nutrition and hydration at this point. Rest and do your best to choke down some calories. Drink lost of fluids. Hope you feel better soon!!

  • Get some sports drink for the sugar/electrolytes. Drink noodle soup or plain chicken broth for calories and sodium. Rest like it's your JOB.

Thanks, you guys.  I feel like a total head case right now!

It's totally normal! I had a nasty chest cold 10 days out from my last marathon and totally came here and freaked out. I got lots of "There, there, it will be ok's" and you know what? You guys were right. :) It sucks, but try not to freak out. I know it's so much easier said than done.

  • You are going to be okay. . . but. . .

You need some calories, electrolytes and plenty of REST!! If you rest now until the race, you will be golden!

electrolytes like everyone else said- broth, coconut water, smart water, etc. load up lady!

Food, food, and FOOD!!! drink meal shakes if you can't chew right now and work up to chewable meals. You gotta eat.

  • You did all the hard work. This won't do you in. Just take good care of yourself the rest of this week and you will be just fine. Trust your training.

  • I'll be honest: did you get a flu shot? Bc it sounds like you have the flu. I'd call your doctor now, bc win the first 36 hrs they can prescribe you something but after that you need to muscle through.

At least talking to a dr at this point will help you and the race.

That was my first thought as well, but I did get one - I get one every year.

I came home at lunch today and slept for four hours andfeel mich better. I ate dinner and so far, so good.

Also, I had similar symptoms to you two weeks ago ( also while traveling).  I had a baaad sore throat though. I rested but surprisingly my teeny base was fine.

IMO you should be fine. Just continue to be realistic and flexible about how you are feeling and your goals :)
