Painting Molding

Hi everyone.  This is my first post on D&R.  We are putting in new molding in our front hall.  We would like it to to be white, but I am only seeing wood trims.  Do we need to sand the molding before painting?

Re: Painting Molding

  • We bought a kind that already had white primer on it, it did not need to be sanded.  We put one coat of paint on before we had it put up, caulked, filled in the nail holes and seams, and then another coat of paint.  We used the same color on all of our crown moulding and trim (BM White Dove).

  • No, you don't need to sand your molding before installation.  Just prime it. It's usually easier to prime and paint them all before you install them too.  Once they're installed, you could just caulk the edges and fill in the nail holes.

  • Where are you only seeing wood trim?

We bought pre-primed trim at Lowe's.  No sanding, no priming, just install and paint.  We've done both crown molding and chair rail that way.

Yeah we bought white primed baseboards and around the door molding at Lowes and also at Menards.  It's already primed so we installed and painted with white paint.

  • I'll admit I haven't actually looked in person yet.  I was just browsing online, and I was not sure of what I was really looking for.  We have a Lowe's near us, so I will talk to one of their associates.

  • We bought trim that is already primed, so it only needs 1 coat of white paint.  We cut it to fit, then paint it and then install it and do touch-ups.

They have pre-primed trim in home depot and lowes.

  • I would prime and paint before installing, then touch up once it's in. And make sure you get wood, not MDF. Any flaw in MDF fluffs up and can't be sanded.
