How long did it take your kid to adjust to the toddler bed?

I'm kind of freaking out. We got DD a "big girl bed" for her birthday this weekend. Nap time was a f-ing nightmare. Luckily last night she was so exhausted from being up at 5:30 am and not having a nap that she fell asleep in my arms during cuddle time and I was able to just roll her into her bed and she slept fine through the night.

I'm really nervous about how tonight will go. DH isn't the most helpful with these things so I'm kind of on my own.

Did doing certain things help your kid adjust faster? How long did it take for them to get used to the new bed?

  • It took 2 nights of screeching, hysterical IIIII WAAAAAAAH MAAAAAAAH CWWWWIIIIIIIIIIBBBBBBBuh!, and then it was never mentioned again.  That's how we've approached all change so far, though.

She never got out of it (she likes sleep, at night), but she did fall out of it on the regular.  It never woke her up.

  • Well, I had Em taking naps in a twin bed starting around 18 months because I realized that she actually napped better there than in the crib, but bedtime was a longer transition. (She was 27 months then, and again, it was a twin bed, not a toddler bed.) I think it took about two weeks before she would stay in her bed at bedtime. At first she would come out every few minutes and call down to us but eventually she got it, or at least she did well most nights. It wasn't until she gave up her nap that she started going to bed without ever procrastinating.

Will was just over two, I think, when we switched him to the toddler bed. We bought this atrocious Lightning McQueen bed, and he slept in it better from the get go than he was sleeping in his crib.

I think the fact that it was Lightning McQueen had *everything* to do with how successfully he transitioned.

    I like privacy. A lot.
  • We have a crib that transitions to a bed, and haven't really had issues. He doesn't have toys in his room, and we put a baby gate across the doorway so he's not really locked in to the room.

Have you tried using the crib sheets and blankets?

  • About three days. She had to see we meant business about her staying in her bed. We switched her to the toddler bed before she turned two.

  • Thanks you guys. Hopefully since she realized she made it through the night, tonight won't be so bad. I don't know why I'm freaking out. I think it is more of an "Oh God. What have I done" kind of a thing.
