Yes, MrsMelB has an actual D&R post :P
So, DH inherited a LARGE (I mean LARGE) library from his Aunt. He was super excited about it. He's very much into history and philosophy and she gave him a really great collection. She's moving to a new house and didn't want to have to carry them with her. The fact that DH wanted them made her super happy. These are treasures to him! I'm excited for him.
Regardless, we ended up needing something to put them on. Some of you may side eye this...and some may fall out of their chairs, but DH found some shelves at Big Lots....yes, Big Lots, and this lady was cool with him purchasing some from there. They aren't super nice like Ashley Furniture or PB, but they are a dark, dark brown (meaning they don't clash with anything in our home) and they do the job
That's my D&R confession. Yes, I am perfectly fine with cheap shelves so my sweet DH can display his books!
Re: Bookshelves
Nothing wrong with cheap shelves. My only caution would be ensure they are strong enough towards the middle of the shelf to support a large amount of heavy books. I know some of the "cheaper" shelving units I've had in my life I had a problem with the middle of the shelf bowing under the weight of a large amount of books or other items.
Post pictures once your DH gets his library all organized!

Oh, yeah. We get that.
How DARE you buy cheap furniture...
Okay I couldn't keep a straight face.
I wish our Big Lots was nicer. However, my SIL got a storage ottoman (hahah I totally started to type "automan" wow.) that matched her couch and loveseat there and it was pretty nice. Just a lot of fluffy, overstuffed couches and not much else at my store.

Thanks Emo:) See THAT was the reaction I was hoping for. ha! DH knows good and well he'll be happy if they make it to our next move. But in reality, they look fine to me. Granted, they'd break easily if some karate black belt head butted one of them....but they seem to be holding our books just fine
These are old books...nothing heavy like an encyclopedia or anything.
That's good to know
See, if there wasn't such an ENORMOUS amount of books, we could have used that same amount of $ to buy something nice. But there's just so many of them. He didn't want to leave them in a box either. SO, we got 5 sets of shelves so he could have them out to access whenever his sweet heart desired
I'm sure they will look great. I didn't mean to imply that because they were cheaper they wouldn't work well or look nice. Hope you didn't take it that way.

Oh no no no...I didn't get that. I was just laughing at how funny it was to ME that we got these shelves that MIGHT make it to our next move....someone needed to reprimand me a little
DH indicated the same thing about what you said. The smaller books are up top.
I adore my Billy Bookcases from Ikea! I say buy what works!
