Painting bathroom floor tile?

We have tile in our master bath. It's small ceramic squares with different colors. The condition is fine (no chips) but we don't like the color. However, a total MB gut is a little ways off.

Has anyone ever heard of painting floor tile? I would just want to paint it white or something simple. It's a pretty small bathroom. Or are there other options I'm not aware of?

TIA!

Re: Painting bathroom floor tile?

  • I've heard of painting a lot of things:  furniture, cabinets, laminate counter tops, light fixtures, hardware, cement and wood floors, backsplash tile... but never floor tile.  Between the water and humidity of a bathroom and the abuse of being on the floor and underfoot, that sounds like a recipe for a flop.

I'd just live with the tile until you're ready to do the gut job.  That's what we're doing.  The tile in our upstairs bath isn't FUGLY, but it's dated, and aggressively blue.  I tone it down with a white bath mat that I can bleach whenever it looks dingy, and think of the day when I'll get to redo it.

  • You are probably right! Big white bath mats :)
  • I've looked into this myself. I hate the bathroom tile in our house. Unfortunately, like the pp stated, you can really only paint wall tiles that are in dry areas. Painting won't work :(

You can save for new tiles right along with me!

  • We painted a bathroom tiled countertop a few months ago.  We know it won't last but it is an improvement.  When DH throws his keys or spare change, it leaves a mark and it's already a little scratched.  We didn't seal it or anything because we really don't care and it did make an improvement until we can gut the whole bath. I am careful not to get the countertops wet and I have a cutting board for my hair straightener to sit on (I was afraid it might melt the paint or something?).

I think painting a floor would be a really bad idea.  I'm not sure you could mop or steam it and the constant water splatter might make it peel up.  We did take a red scotch pad and wet sanded the tile, primed twice and painted twice but it doesn't hold up well.
