Need recommendation for baby blanket yarn, please help.

Hi Craft board!  I am popping over from the bump to get some help.  I am a newby at crochet and am going to start my second baby blanket.  I'm struggling with what type of yarn to use.  I am on a budget but feel like the "baby" yarns at the craft mega-store are super plasticy and cheap.  They also split a lot when you are working with them.

But when I go to the local swanky yarn store, they keep trying to sell me on the $25/skein artisan yarns that will bankrupt me.  What do you guys think?  I just want something that will be super soft and wash well without pilling and terribly losing it's shape.

Thanks!

Re: Need recommendation for baby blanket yarn, please help.

  • I know some people use high-end yarn for baby blankets, but I usually just use acrylic because 1) it washes easily and 2) it's inexpensive.  I just got a shipment of knipicks new acrylic (brava) and I really like it and will probably use it for most of my acrylic needs now.

For baby blankets, I (and many on here) like Caron Simply Soft.  It splits a bit if you have to frog and re-work the yarn, but is very soft.  I also like Vanna's Choice Baby (from Lion Brand) for baby projects.

  • I pretty much agree with everything BlueLikeJazz said.  I'm also a fan of Caron Simply Soft and generally don't have much of a problem with it splitting while working with it.  It might also be the hooks you're using--I found that the Boye crochet hooks gave me more problems, while Susan Bates were much better.
I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I third BlueLikeJazz, and also second Rock-n-Voll on the Caron Simply Soft. It's very soft and also very affordable and I use it for a lot of things like hats and scarves - it is not like the Red Heart yarn which I think is very plasticy and cheap feeling (also super scratchy!)

If I am not mistaken, I think Caron makes a Simply Soft Baby yarn but I might be imagining this...hehe

  • Thanks ladies.  I'll stick with my acrylic yarn.  It IS super soft. :)

  • I really like Lion Homespun.  SO soft!
