Re: Pls critique this stuffed shells recipe
Ha! Should I not be getting my recipes from allrecipes??? LOL
Any other sites you recommend?
It's up to you! I do use Allrecipes, but so many of their top-rated recipes include processed, packaged foods. I usually do an ingredients search and make sure to include "mix", "box", and "jar" in my ingredients NOT to use, because I like making things from scratch. If you don't mind convenience products like that, then by all means, use Allrecipes--it's very extensive! Food.com is similar to Allrecipes in terms of content. Foodnetwork.com has a decent recipe collection--I usually filter the results to ones from a few of my favorite chefs (Alton Brown, Giada, Ina). I like www.epicurious.com and www.marthastewart.com, too. A lot of food magazines also have online recipes that can be quite good!
A lot of the ladies on this board have blogs with all sorts of different (yummy!) recipes! I like reading blogs because the blogger might make note of a step that she thought was particularly tricky or whatever, which is a nice commentary that you don't get from a regular recipe.
thank you so much! this is very helpful...I greatly appreciate you taking the time to respond. I also really like your tip about ingredients NOT to incude on allrecipes. Thanks again. Now i'm off to find a "real" stuffed shells recipe!
For basic recipes, I think allrecipes is fine to at least get a general idea of what you're doing. However, I do agree that they tend to use a lot of processed ingredients.
I love reading others blogs for the same reason as the pp, but Food and Wine is always my go to non-blog site. I used to really love the Food Network site, but sometimes a search yields too many results, which can be either frustrating or confusing deciding which one to pick.
You could easily make that recipe even better with homemade pasta sauce, fresh parsley, maybe some spinach or something just to lighten it up. Play around with it until you find what works for you. Good luck!
It probably gets top ratings because it's easy and satisfying. Yeah, it's jarred sauce, but once in a while you need something quick and this probably tastes good in the end.
My go-to site for recipes is usually Epicurious. I tend to trust it more than the general public of all-recipes, but only one way to find out ... try it out for yourself. Sub a homemade marinara, add fresh spinach or whatever other veggies you want; you could even add crumbled Italian sausage.
