wbciiy: DH's primary care doctor quit. Weird. Also, a question.

We got a letter from DH's primary care doctor on Saturday.  The doctor typed it up himself (I can tell because it was full of typos, lol) and it wasn't even on letterhead, just a plain piece of paper.  Basically the letter said that he was selling his practice and effective Monday (today) there would be new doctors taking over, but most of the other staff would still be there.

DH is pretty good friends with one of the nurses there so he drove up there and wanted to know what was going to happen next.  She said that the entire staff just found out about the sale of the practice on Friday and that the doctor is GONE. Like he left the country and his wife, who is also a physician, quit her job. They pulled their kids out of school and all went to Canada.

Needless to say DH is pretty devastated by this turn of events. He's had this same doctor for 15 years.

He has already decided that he doesn't want to see the new doctors who bought the practice because one is a woman & he doesn't want a female doctor and the other doctor has a really heavy accent and he can't understand him.

I've been going to the same doctor's office for +15 years and whenever a doctor left the practice, I just switched to the new one without any issues but DH is really concerned because of his health issues.

Question:  How do you go about finding a new doctor? Do you just cold call them and see if they take your insurance and then set up a consultation appointment?  Is that type of appointment covered by insurance?

TIA.

Re: wbciiy: DH's primary care doctor quit. Weird. Also, a question.

  • I would just use Yelp and look at the reviews. I've not heard of a consultation appointment for a general practicioner; I'd guess you'd have to check with your insurance.
  • Intake visits are covered by most insurance, but where your H has had a lot of ongoing issues, I would double check first to be sure, just in case they try to pull something shady, based on however many visits he's already had this year.

I would get a list of providers on your insurance, and then ask around for recommendations from that list. Most of my doctors I have found based on recommendations from other people, and/or from knowing them professionally beforehand.

Also, I have decided that your H's doctor definitely had some sort of legal troubles, and now I'm making up all kinds of juicy stories. Just so you know.

  • This is shady!  Ooooooh. something is up!

Ask his other docs for recommendations. He has a complex history and needs a good primary doc to keep it all together for him.

Why won't he see a woman?

I totally think something is up too but DH WORSHIPS his doctor so I can't say anything bad about him, LOL.

I asked DH about the female doctor thing and he just said he's not comfortable talking about some of his health issues and/or having a woman handle his junk or get all up in there when he's having problems with his butthole. (Hemorrhoids, LOL).
