I don't think this is going to work
I went to the doctor today because I've been having some anxiety for a long time now. He gave me a prescription for Xanax, which kind of surprised me because I've always thought of it as situational, but he said one a day was fine.
I took one 0.5 mg pill and oh my gaaaaaaah. I haven't done sh.it in 4 hours. I feel like a jelly fish and I am talking very sloooooow. I guess I can try to take half and see how that works. I thought my doc was going to go the anti-depressant route but I suppose I'll try this for awhile and see how it goes.
Re: I don't think this is going to work
OMG! I just realized I'm a silver poster!
I wish I could work up more excitement but zzzzzzz...
Yeah, definitely try half and see how that goes.
Also, Xanax should ABSOLUTELY only be used situationally. If you find yourself needing to take it every day, you need to be on some kind of maintenance medication.

It's because you took the Xanax.
Ugh. I had anxiety about going to the doctor for this in the first place. I guess I'll try half doses a few times a week and see how it goes.
i thought xanax was one of those "last resort" types of meds. i obviously know nothing about anything, i just thought i heard that somewhere.
i hope you feel better soon
I didn't even know you had anxiety.
Sorry to hear. Is it really bad?
LOL
I don't think xanax lasts long enough to just be taken once a day, plus it is addictive w/ pretty bad withdrawal effects. I would ask your doc about an SSRI.
eta: I mean your body becomes physically dependent on it. I'm not sure if that's the same as an addiction! I don't think you're jonesing for a fix or anything, but it's bad news if you quit. That's what I mean.
This should be your explanation of discontinuation to your doctor. Um, I became a silver poster on The Nest annnndd couldn't even properly celebrate. It was then that I knew that these pills weren't gonna work!
(Of course just kidding PP, hope you get things figured out soon!)
About 10 yrs ago my dr prescribed Xanax to be used twice daily, and I felt just like you do. I couldn't do it for very long.
Now, I'm experiencing some anxiety/depression again. My current dr said they typically don't prescribe Xanax to be used like that anymore.
I have white-coat anxiety, too. I try to write down questions and concerns I have beforehand, because otherwise I'll just freeze and nod and do whatever they say. I also started seeing a therapist who, while she is a phd, knows a lot about the current meds and can help me prepare for my dr's visits. I don't really like my gp that much, she blinks A LOT and it makes me crazy.
Today Instead of Working
I would actually really like a xanax RX. What does that say about me?
Sorry your meds aren't working. Talk to your doctor, try something else. Everything works differently for everyone. There might be something out there that meets your needs.
Are you going through something situational right now? My scrip says something like "Once or twice daily as needed" but my psychiatrist knows I don't take it that often, but that I WAS when I was going through some shiit.
Basically what that ramble was meant to say was ... it can be written that way but not be meant to be taken that way.

Maybe I really just need a good massage, lol.

The thought of your being a fun sucker has never ever crossed my mind.
I know fun suckers. You are not one of them!
It sounds like isolated instances. Maybe it's not as bad as you think it is. Of course, if it is as bad as you think it is, there's nothing wrong with that either. I just hope the doctor can help you get to your happy place.
You definitely don't seem like a fun sucker.
I have a lot of anxeity over the same types of things you seem to get anxiety about. I was given xanax, I am only able to take half of a pill at a time or I can't function but usually that one in the morning will take the edge off and I will be fine for the rest of the day.
In addition to the medication I was also sent to relaxation therapy where they taught me relaxation and coping mechanisms to deal with my anxiety. The thing that helped me the most was guided meditations and I still do them if I am keyed up before taking the xanax.
The xanax doesn't seem like an awful idea but I think if it turns out you are using it more often than not, it might be time to switch to a SSRI. I do think you also should try therapy to learn some better coping mechanisms, oh and a massage here and there never hurt anyone:)

I want to punch your Dr. in the face.
Xanax IS situational only and will never treat the underlying cause of your anxiety. I want to throttle GP's who just hand over a script for Xanax instead of asking a few more questions, telling you about SSRI's and behavioral therapy (the latter two, along with cutting out caffiene and fake sugar completely took me from multiple daily panic attacks to none.)
You're right to question this.
I agree.
My psychopathology professor, who currently treats patients suffering from anxiety and panic disorders, made it very clear that Xanax is only to be used as an occasional supplement to other treatments. Like PP mentioned, APA is really pushing a combination of SSRIs and psychotherapy as a main line of treatment for anxiety and panic disorders.
Xanax really shouldn't be handed out so freely - it can make depression worse (which is important, because depression is often comorbid with anxiety disorders), and long term use has been linked to cognitive damage (memory and attention problems, decline in intelligence, etc.) that can be irreversible.
glad you feel better though.
The cd that the relaxation therapist had me use was Carolyn McManus. I wonder if I can have DH zip it tonight so I can email it to you. I can check into that if you want.
I am also a fan of the meditation oasis on itunes, those are free which is nice.
I was very leery about meditation but it helped so much.
