do you always as for a discount
When having work done on your home do you always as for a discount? I am being quoted $850 for 644sq feet of deck to be stained. Does this sound fair for staining?

Re: do you always as for a discount
We usually negotiate. I usually get several bids to get an idea of the market. Then I see who I liked best and what the range of bids are. Sometimes I just take the lowest. If I liked another one the best and it is only a little more, I take them... or if it is a lot more, I share the other lower quotes and ask why are so much higher (sometimes there are legitimate reasons for higher quotes) or ask them to match the lowest. We got about 6 bids for our roof and each one was lower than the last (it was actually really weird). At first, we only got 3 bids and we were going with the middle one and my Dad talked us into getting more and we ended up saving over $1K (same shingles and everything).
I'm not sure if that price is reasonable or not. If you get a few bids and they are all about the same, it is probably market.
Only if it is fair. I will get several bids and ask the person I really want to match the lowest if it is comparable and I really want them. If they bid too high to get the job, then they should have priced the job truthfully. Personally, I find neg. everything just a bit degrading. Yes...I will prob be blasted for this but I do feel this way. Things should be priced properly and we should not neg. like third world country citizens.
As for your original question...I am not sure if it is a good price. I think of staining similarly to painting. If it is close, I would think that price if high. Regardless, my rec is to contact 3 people for bids.
Is it a new deck? Will they be sanding, cleaning and all that jazz?
If they are literally just plopping down stain, I think the price is outrageous, and I'd be happy to do it for you for half that.
