Does anyone have a fern?

I recently posted about being a bad plant raiser and got great advice on starting off with cacti as they're easy to maintain. I'm not planning to get any other plants until Ive kept my new cacti alive for some time, but my parents have some ferns that they are willing to give to me. Does anyone have a fern and is it easy to maintain? Can you give me any advice on whether they should be outdoors or indoors, how much sun they need, maintenance requirements and if they do well in large pots?

 Thanks a lot :)

Whether it can stay outside depends on what kind of fern it is. Does it live outside at your parents house? Do they live close by?

My ferns are hardy, and evergreen; all of them are outside year round in large, mixed containers. Some are tropical, and very sensitive to cold and wind.

  • My parents actually got them from a farm they have in a cool place. They uproot them and put them in pots, but Im not sure if they have also put them inside (in the winter). I guess thats a question I should ask them.

It sounds like the ones I will be getting are a lot like yours. Do you cover them in the winter or leave them open?

  • I can't speak to what your parents have since you don't know what they are.  I can tell you the ones most commonly sold in big box stores around here are either Boston or Kimberly.  I'm in zone 7b and they go dead as doornails here in the winter and do not come back.

Those 2 kinds require constant moisture if kept outdoors.  During the heat of the summer, you'll need to mist them daily with water in addition to daily watering.  If it's been an especially hot dry spell and you have them in containers, you'll need to bring them inside and soak them in the bathtub for a few hours so they get really good and wet.

Those 2 ferns will do indoors, but they still need to be misted (making a mess) and watered every 2-3 days.

I'm not having ferns this year for a reason ;P

We live in the midwest and we have some sort of fern-type-things growing in our planters. They died off in the fall and then came back even bigger this year...

As you can tell I'm not the botanical expert here
