Healthy snacks on the go?

My BF and I both work in the food industry and he recently started a job about an hour away from where we live. The stress of the job, the crazy long hours and the lack of time he has to make himself something to eat has made him loose about 10 lbs since he started the job.

He asked me yesterday if I could make him some things that he could take with him to work and eat when he had only a few minutes of down time. I was thinking of making some granola bars, maybe with some protein powder in them for extra calories and to help him stay on his feet longer.

Any other suggestions?

Re: Healthy snacks on the go?

  • Good question!  I have been on this quest for DH for awhile.  He doesn't want to take the time to sit down to eat at work either.  But I don't want him just eating crap.  :(  Everything I suggest he says "eh, I probably wouldn't eat that", or "I don't want to carry that around".  sigh.  And now we are trying to go low carb....so that really cuts out lots of the "easy" stuff!

carrots (or other cut up veggies)

fruit (or dried fruit....but that has lots of sugars)

    hard boiled eggs

    nut mix

muffins (I am redoing some of my muffin recipes w/o flour and sugar)

  • almonds/cashews/other nuts, string cheese or cubed cheese, crackers, pretzels, yogurt, fruit, veggies and dip, jello, granola bars, smoothies, snack sized bag of popcorn, no bake cookies, rolled up lunch meat, hard boiled eggs, etc.

If he needs breakfast items too, what about making ans freezing breakfast sandwiches or burritos that he could pop in the microwave when he gets to work or while he's getting ready and eat in the car?

  • My go-to when I need a pick me up that's portable and will keep me full is trail mix.  I make my own, throwing in whatever sounds good...various kinds of nuts, M&Ms, raisins, chocolate covered graham crackers, pretzels, dried fruit, mini PB cups, chips, cheerios, etc.  It's never the same two batches in a row.

I also make a lot of granola bars, using peanut butter for protein (but protein powder would be a great addition, too...I just don't think my kids need it and they eat most of the bars I make).  Breakfast cookies are along the same lines...I make them with oatmeal, peanut butter, mashed banana.

Some cut up veggies and an individual serving pack of guacamole or hummus might be good.  So are yogurt, hard boiled eggs and/or string cheese (these all depend on whether or not he wants to carry a small insulated bag, though, since they need refrigeration).

  • Thanks for all the suggestions.

I'm thinking I'll make a big batch of granola bars, trail mix, hardboiled eggs and breakfast burritos/sandwiches today and maybe bag up some veggies  and cheese every few days. I'm guessing he will love all of this.
