I have had this happen too. Except it was a good night fart. Just as we all got settled in....
Our kitten Rocco runs to take the nastiest anxiety craps while I'm scooping the litterbox. It makes for some awkwardness.
I guess he doesn't like that new and clean litter feeling so he has to muck it up asap.
This whole post reminds me again why I'm thankful we don't have cats. Our dog is gross enough, tyvm.
