Has anyone used Behr paint in the last two years? Or painted different rooms different brands?

We are having a painter come in July to paint our soon to be house (we close in June). He said he used to only use BM paint, but the past two years he's been using Behr. He claims the formula has changed and it is just as good.  We are purchasing the paint, and he said he will paint whatever we want, but thinks BM is overpriced and Behr just as scrubbable, good coverage, etc.

However, BM has more colors than Behr (the back of the Behr paint cards say they can't color match to others). Would it be weird to use BM in some rooms and Behr in others when painting a whole house?

Am I crazy to consider using Behr? This guy has nothing to gain by us using a specific brand, so I'm inclined to trust him, but I only know 1 person who has used Behr recently (my SIL) and she loves it, Her whole house was BM before. WDYT?

  • HD has all the formulas for BM and SW in their system. Behr has a terrible color collection, but we always use their paint (the paint and primer in one is excellent, one coat and you are done).  So we just have them look up the formula for the color we want.

So you've been satisfied with Behr? I just re-read the back of the card and it said it can't be "precisely" matched. Clearly my reading comprehension isn't the best. Thank you!

  • I have used them all and prefer SW.  For around $30 I can get a great paint with a lot of colors.  Before we bought our house I always used Behr and when we moved in we painted over 2000 sqft w Behr and in a lot of places it doesn't look good.  We have done the rest of the house with SW and I like the coverage much better.

I think you should do what you want.  It's no big deal to use 2 diff paints in your house if you like the coverage. :)

  • Our interior paint is Behr in some rooms and Valspar in others.  I used to swear by Behr, but I prefer Valspar (available at Lowe's).

I don't see anything wrong with having different paint brands throughout your home.  I think getting the color you want is far more important than the brand.

This is a CYA thing for them- they say it can't be precisely matched so that if you buy $500 worth of paint and it's not exactly, 100% the same as another store's formula, you're not entitled to a refund.  We've had good luck getting them to color-match using just the name of another brand's paint.

We've used their paint + primer formula in 3 rooms and have been happy with it.

  • I love Behr - but I agree that their color selection is not so great.  But you can color match and ask them to lighten or darken their colors.  I just painted our bedroom in Behr Ash Violet - but 50% lighter.  I'm going to paint stripes in Benjamin Moore North Cascades.
  • My dad is a contractor, and also owns rentals. He always recommends Behr to his clients and ALWAYS uses it in his rentals. Most of our house is Behr, and it's held up very well. I have encountered idiot salespeople at one particular big box store who don't know how to color match to other brands or do 50% mixes, but that's a store issue, not a brand issue.

I definitely don't think there's anything wrong with having different paint brands in your home--really, who is going to have any idea in real life?

  • I used Behr Ultra in two rooms and I've been very happy with it. I'm using SW Duration on some trim in our family room and I honestly can't tell much of a difference (and probably slightly prefer the Behr).
  • Color matching is available at every paint store in the US.  (Apparently it's not done in Canada.)  All the companies can match all the other companies' colors.  At HD and Lowe's, they have many of the formulas in their computers; in not, they'll scan the chip to figure out the color.

The matching is near perfect for 99.9% of us without magic super vision.  The differences are in the base.  One company's paint may have a drop more blue in it than a competitor's, etc.  That means the finished color will have a drop more blue in it...in all that gallon of white.  Like I said, normal people can't see this.

I've used and been pleased with Behr's all-in-one, Valspar's all-in-one, and SW.  They're all equal to me.

  • I always use Behr, apart from the outside of the house but that was because the HOA has specific colors and a 20% off deal with Dunn-Edwards so I figured I might as well just get the paint there.

I've never had anything color matched so I can't speak to that. DH picks the paint colors (or we'd STILL be choosing colors years later lmao) and he's always found suitable colors in Behr.

  • We painted our entire new house in February.  I matched colors swatches to inspiration pieces.  We used a mix of Behr, Martha Stewart and Benjamin Moore depending on which brand had the best match to our inspriration piece. I have used all three before without problems.
  • I have used both Behr and BM in the past few years. I have also color matched Behr paint to BM colors.

You are not crazy. Painters are snobby that way. They are both good brands.

I am in Canada and HD color matched Behr paint to a BM color for me (the already had the code in the computer when I toldhem the BM paint color name)
