Brought to you by the upcoming Triple Crown and my deceased FIL's betting strategies as remembered during this year's Grand National which DH and I listened to on the radio. (a female jockey very nearly won it for the first time, it was very exciting)
My FIL used to bet on the horses - he would have had the winner (someone bet on the gray, he always did) at 30ish to 1 in the GN and has won bets with odds like this before. I wanted to kill him once he bet on a horse named Hurricane Nigel who won with huge odds and never tipped off his son and dutiful DIL, lol.
I am tempted to lay down some bets this year.

Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
Re: Do you play the ponies?
only if i actually go to the races. otherwise, no.
hiiiiiiiiiiiiii
only this kind!
HI!
Yes! We go to Santa Anita for the Sunshine Millions every year because they have a beerfest/food trucks at the same time. We usually sit in the middle of the track because it's easier with the kid but I can't wait until she is old enough to sit still in a damn seat so we can sit in the stands.
I ALWAYS lose my ass at the horse races. Our friends have their kids pick their bets for win, place, show and they ALWAYS win (usually with the frickin underdogs). They won $300 on a $9 bet!
I'll be parked on the couch all day Saturday in eager anticipation of the Derby. Horse racing is my favorite sport......but unfortunately my state doesn't allow you to wager online. Boo.
I won an essay contest my sophmore year of high school and got to attend the Santa Anita Derby and the Preakness. I go to Oaklawn whenever I can since my aunt lives in Hot Springs. We were just there in March and I won about $80.
I have always wanted to go to Santa Anita!
I miss England where there is a betting shop on every corner and you can bet on bloody anything, lol.
I also love going to horseraces although I've only ever been to harness.
Also flameful we used to go to the dogs at Walthamstowe when I lived in London, THAT was always a fun night out.
hiiiiiiiiiiiiii!
lol my little ponies - I can teach L. all about the Trifecta with play ponies!!
Yeah that's right my name's Yauch!
We're kind of going out.
um, me too!
If you've never read Hunter S. Thompson's 1970 article for Rolling Stone, The Kentucky Derby is Decadent and Depraved, with illustrations by Ralph Steadman, you really should.
