name change in Texas - new photo required?

Hi.  Pardon the vain question here, but does anyone know if you are required to get a new photo taken at the Texas DMV when you apply for a name change on your driver license?  I really like my current driver license photo and it's pretty recent (as in, if not for the name change, I think I could keep it for at least 5 more years).

Thanks!

  • When did this law go into effect?

  • YEP!  Also, you need to change your drivers license and social security card on the same day (may have changed but was a requirement when I got mine changed).

I did mine about 1 year ago plus a few months. I did not have to do them on the same day. I think I had 30 days to change it after the ss change. And yes, you have to get a new picture. In fact DH lost my license a few months before we got married and I had to change pictures then too which I did not want to do. I give DH a hard time - he is a Texan. (I have only been here 6 years.) In FL, you walk out of DMV with your real license instead of a stupid piece of paper.
  • Darn.... thanks for confirming what I suspected though!  There are evidently no humans at the Austin DMV customer service center.

  • Yes, I had mine changed in Septemer and I had to take a new photo.
