Anyone else building a house? Kitchen help...
I just can't decide on our kitchen.....white cabinets? Dark wood cabinets? Black granite? Light granite?
Our floor plan is very open --- so our living area/dining room/kitchen will be painted all one color, and I'd like it to be a nice light gray (Revere Pewter perhaps). All trim and doors will be white. My hubby thinks white cabinets/white backsplash and black granite would look good, but we are wondering if it will be too "blah". Does it need a pop of something? Would dark cabinets look better? We will have an island as well.
What would you do? or what are you doing??
Re: Anyone else building a house? Kitchen help...
that's what I would do! I think it's a classic look.
We built our house 4 years ago but we have cream-colored peripheral cabinets and a black island. Our granite is "lighter' colored (Santa Cecilia)

And can I ask one more question?? IF we do the white cabs/black granite/white subway tile/stainless steel appliances (lol lots of detail).....what color sink?? I say classic stainless, but hubby says black.
Newbie here, but not really, I used to be a D&R regular back when I got married in '04.
Hi!
HOUSE BLOG
I think it would look really pretty with light gray walls. We never painted our kitchen walls so they're still off-white, but the connecting breakfast nook and family room (open floorplan) are painted Restoration Hardware Silver Sage and it looks really pretty.
and yes, add color with accessories! :-)
ours is stainless and I like it. I'm not a fan of black sinks, I like to see what's in my sink.
I think this all sounds great. And I would do a SS sink, that's just my personal preference though.
We are in the middle of building our home and did our kitchen selects a few weeks ago. Pictures and info in my blog, link in siggy.
Before going to the design center we spent a lot of time looking at pictures online and getting an idea of what we liked and didn't. Being at the design center was also helpful because they were able to show us all our options.

We painted our walls gray and are putting in espresso cabs and light white granite, with white subway tile backsplash. The granite hasn't been installed yet but so far everything looks really classy. I agree on pops of color with accessories - much easier to change!
FWIW - I currently have black granite in my rental and I despise it. It shows every swipe of the rag, every tiny crumb or dust particle. I probably am not cleaning it right or something, but I didn't want countertops that I can't quickly clean. Just my experience!
Do you have a picture???

I am in the middle of the same exact thing and I also had black granite in my past house and hated it. It looked great but EVERYTHING showed!!! This time i chose espresso cabinets with Giallo Ornamental Granite -
Hoping it looks as good as i picture it. Anyone have this by the way?

This is us too. We have taupe walls because I painted my DR grey, but our cabinets are black and we have Kashmir White granite which is a creamy granite with some hints of taupe/grey and reddish speckles. Our backsplash will be a light subway tile that has taupe/grey undertones. I had dark granite in my last kitchen and it was a total PITA to keep clean. The granite I have now is effortless. I wipe it down with a damp cloth and I'm done. Doesn't show streaks.
Only of the wall color, the cabinets are there but not installed yet. We did also do a blue accent wall. Oh and for sink, we did a white apron sink. I really like how it's all coming together. If you are interested, there are some pics on my blog here (wall colors) and cabinets here. Here is one of the "inspiration" pics from Pinterest:

Sorry that picture didn't show, if you click on it it should take you to pinterest!
Also, I'm glad to know I'm not the only person who can't keep black granite looking clean!
We aren't building but we aer doing a total gut renovation of our kitchen in the recently purchased home.
I prefer dark cabinets with light counter tops. Just my preference.
Or.... you can do a combination of dark and light cabinets.

I totally disagree! I have no problem keeping my black granite clean-- you just have to dry them
I prefer dark cabinets and light countertops but it sounds like the white cabinets w/black countertop will work nicely too with your wall color and design.
I just completely despise white cabinets...
