thundershirt?

Anyone have any experience with these?  My 6 year old lab is terrified of storms and I have yet to find anything that helps him.  I've heard good things about the thundershirt...  thoughts?

Re: thundershirt?

  • The Thundershirt can help, but depending on the severity of anxiety, you may also need to do some desensitization/counterconditioning and/or medications to solve the issue.

I haven't dealt with thunder anxiety first-hand, but we tried it with my dog's car anxiety, and it seemed to help some and make her more receptive to the counterconditioning we were doing. She's not 100% in the car yet, but we have made a lot of progress.

I think holistic solutions like Thundershirt and/or Rescue Remedy are a good place to start, but don't be afraid to talk to your vet or a veterinary behaviorist if the problem persists or if it's extremely severe.

  • We use the thundershirt for our ESS and he seems to do well with it. The problem is his long fur if we leave it on him for more than a few hours it starts to get matted. His issues are from abuse as a puppy so he freaks out every single time he sees a boy aged 5-8 or a bicycle. By freaks out I mean full blown panic attack.

At this point, we try our best to keep him away from those situations and distract him when he starts to panic.

If you don't like what they're saying about you, change the conversation.

  • we had zero luck with the thundershirt, though we were using it for separation anxiety, not storm anxiety.

  • A combo of Thundershirt and Rescue Remedy are effective in our home.  The good thing is that the Thundershirt has a 45-day money back guarantee.  We had to give it a try a few times before we saw improvement.  Now I hold it up and she comes to me to get it on.

The key is to do these things BEFORE the storm has arrived.  Once they are in full panic, it's hard to bring them out of it.  A frozen kong of goodies as storm approaches is helpful too, but again before panic kicks in.
