Emily Henderson's post on design interns

Did anyone else read this?

http://www.stylebyemilyhenderson.com/blog/15-dos-and-donts-when-trying-to-get-and-keep-a-design-intern.html

This is from Emily Henderson's blog (she won Design Star on HGTV).  I've been reading her blog for awhile and I found this post particularly grating. I actually think she amended some of the original language in it.  It sounds super condescending to me and that she has become some kind of super boss.  I realize she was trying to be helpful, but she could have a different tone.  It makes me not relate to her.

Re: Emily Henderson's post on design interns

  • I didn't find it particulary grating....I found it it to be an honest vent with a pretty good description of the entitled masses out there (paid or not), who think that all it takes to get famous/$150,000 a year/whatever, is to exist.  There were also some good 'dos and don'ts' in there.
  • Looks like a pretty good run-down of tips for any entry-level or internship position.

  • I've never liked her.

  • I think this means it's just time for you to stop reading the blog :)  As a 30 year old who's gone back to school and will start yet another internship in a couple weeks, I can tell you that what she said is pretty standard, no matter the industry.
  • although i think most of her tips are good (obvi work ethic, be on time, do things without asking 500 questions) but then she's like telling people not to share their opinion until she has decided that your opinion matters -- a weee bit high maintenance for me.  She lost me there.

This bothered me too. Don't get me wrong, I love her style (LOVED her on Design Star), and while some of this is helpful, I found a few things she said to be more than a little high and mighty.

My favorite is when she mentions that what you wear is important to being in a creative field. I'm a graphic/web designer (a pretty successful one, too). But if people judged my creativity level based on what I wear I'd be out of a job. I'm all about sweaters/jeans/tee shirts/flip flops, and not the trendy stuff either. Does that make me less talented than someone who spends an hour choosing an outfit to wear each morning?

    This burns me up.

  • I pretty much agree with what she says. i used to be in the clothing business as a store manager, and did a lot of interviewing. My favorite question to ask was 'Sell me your outfit" and I was continually amazed how many people couldn't. If you are looking for a job selling clothes, and you are interviewing (best you have to show me?) you better be able to sell me on that! You chose it to wear. So, the comment about dressing the part...yeah. Totally. There is nothing wrong with a "uniform" or outfit formula (TH&R, I'm thinking you), just put a little effort forth. People notice...and judge. It's a fact.

So true, I really feel like this can be helpful for a lot of fields.

  • I have been reading her blog for a while.  I think she is insecure about her celebrity and covers it up by using sarcasm and humor.  This post was an example of that sarcasm and humor gone wrong.  Instead it came out sounding condescending.  I think she needs to own her celebrity and be proud of what she has accomplished instead of minimalizing it.
