cup cake help!

I want to bake my own cup cakes for my dd first b-day to save money. I'm not very creative but really want the cup cakes to look nice. Any suggestions on what type of cake decorating tools to use for a beginner and I also want to make my own frosting anyone have a good recipe?

Re: cup cake help!

  • TBH, I choose flavor over extravagant looking cupcakes.  Here are some recipes I've used:

For frosting, I use the Domino buttercream frosting recipe that's on the back of the confectioner's sugar box.

To frost a cupcake, I load a ziploc bag with frosting and then cut a corner of the bag.  Then in a circular motion, I swirl the frosting on top of the cupcake so it looks like this:

  • ^I wouldn't do the above method with chocolate frosting--it has an unfortunate tendency to look like poop.  It works just fine for white or pastel colors.

Piping a swirl with a large start tip (I think mine is M1?) looks very professional, too.  Piping bags work best, but you can use a ziploc bag instead if you don't want to buy a piping bag--just snip off one corner, stick the tip in there, then fill with frosting.

  • I have a bunch of cupcakes in my blog. I agree with pp that chocolate frosting looks like poop sometimes :) A simple pastry bag and a nice large star tip, like 1M works great. You can buy that tip and the party bag in a Wilton cupcake decorating kit for $7? Goodluck!

  • Good point! I don't make cupcakes with chocolate frosting, so I've never seen the frosting result in a pile of poop.
