Indoor/Outdoor Rug in Kitchen?

I am a long time ago poster (probably haven't posted over here in over 3 years) and will probably be coming back more frequently as we just moved into our brand new construction home in Feb. Lots to decorate!

Anyway, we have a very large breakfast room and I want to put a rug underneath the table. The problem? I have 16 month old twins and a 4 year old who are all still very messy eaters.

I was thinking an indoor/outdoor rug might be a good solution, but them wondering if that would cause damage to my hardwood floors.

Good or bad idea?

Re: Indoor/Outdoor Rug in Kitchen?

  • We have an indoor/outdoor rug in our kitchen and I love it.  It's not the softest on the bare feet but we have two large dogs who like to drool whenever they come near the table and my kids (3 and 7) still aren't as neat as I would need them to be for a regular rug.  The indoor/outdoor one, wipes clean with water and it doesn't scratch up my hardwood.  You could always put a rug pad under it though if your concerned.
  • I think there's all kinds of indoor/outdoor rugs and different materials they come in, but ours is one of the Dash and Albert indoor/outdoor rugs and it feels almost like their woven cotton. It's not scratchy, but since it's a flat weave it's not cushy or soft like a plush rug either. It doesn't hurt your feet though. It is super easy to clean and stains come right out. I don't think the material of the D&A indoor/outdoor rug would hurt your floors.
  • I had an indoor/outdoor rug in my kitchen for years!

Worked great, easy care, easy clean. I just got rid of it about 2 weeks ago because it was looking worn/wanted the update and it was seagrass and it was a little rough on my 9 month old's knees. I moved it to our mudroom...so it's still going strong.

I replaced it with a cheap Target rug. It looks good. I just shake out and vacuum as necessary. I'll take the hose to it on occassion. I figure it was less than $40.00 when it's wrecked it's wrecked.

I don't think it would ruin your floors at all. Most indoor/outdoor rugs can be a bit scratchy on the top but most have a backing on them.
