Can we discuss some hot topics in the news?
People are saying because Julias approval rating is so low Labor may try to bring back Ruddy. Do you think they will? Do you think she'll be ousted because of the Slipper & Thompson scandal?
Matthew Newton, I don't even know what I want to say here. He's such a loose cannon. IMHO, I think he's a spoiled little rich boy who doesn't really suffer from a mental illness. He just drinks too much and then wants to have an easy out when things go south.
Feel free to add any other hot topics!

Re: Aussie Girls: hot topics
I don't really understand the deal with Slipper -- okay, so he abused taxi privileges, but the whole deal with the gay office worker is confusing. I really don't get the deal. Why would you admit to being openly gay for a clerk position? And once you have, what makes you think people aren't going to be reading things into innocent actions? Really as far as Slipper goes, I think it's all down to ratings-earnings scandal.
I haven't been following the Thompson issue. After the trumped up ratings-scandal regarding Slipper, I stopped paying attention to the other scandals.
I do think that any talk of bringing back Rudd is just media speculation. Rudd said he would not challenge for leadership for the remainder of this term. I take him it his word on that one. I don't think he's going to make a move until the 2013 elections.
As for a leadership spill, that I think is media speculation. But I would not put it past Abbot and the Libs to call for a no-confidence motion. To be honest I am surprised that has not already been floated to the media.
Yea I haven't really been following the whole Slipper thing.
I don't think they will oust Julia though - they've been saying that for ages and there was that vote not long ago and they still kept Julia in.
As for Matthew Newton *sigh* what a mess - I feel bad for his parents - they must be SO embarrassed! Have you seen his Mom on celebrity apprentice? She is SO sweet and nice. I agree that he probably just grew up OVER privileged and has totally lost his grasp on reality - so so sad. I hope eventually he can get his act together. After that whole attacking the hotel clerk drama I saw Bert on the news and he looked SO old and tired - this must be hard on their family.
Umm, are we expected to really get into politics here? :: whistles innocently::
I know who these people are, and that there was some big brewhaha about a vote of confidence and sending someone to "The Back Bench" right when I first got here. But as for really knowing WTF is going on? Nope. No idea.
This is due entirely to that fact that I found Friends on TV from 6 - 7 p.m. so I switched to watching that instead of the news.
Signed,
Terrible Australian Resident
Left to my own devices, I'd be a terrible Australian resident as well. But DH follows politics as his sport so any time there is any political issue anywhere, we follow it to the very end. I keep telling him to "explain it to me like I'm 5" but it never helps. I get a long winded discussion that leaves often me more confused. The latest attempt to understand was the Peter Slipper thing. And I am still lost as to what the big deal is.
I'd lived her over a year before DH told me that in her former career, Julia was a school principal. I can't listen to her talk now without hearing that "I know what's best for everyone" kind of voice. Before I knew, I really didn't have a problem with her, but now I can only see her talking down to people. And despite the results of the spill vote, I do not think she has the backing of the Labor party as a whole. I always liked Rudd, so I was hoping the spill would have turned out in his favour.
I can't take Abbot seriously -- I keep looking at him and thinking what DH complains "He does horrid things to ties." I find myself more obsessed with his treatment of a strip of silk than what he is saying about the issue at hand.
But I find too that I think Abbot and the Libs are contrary to Gillard and Labor regardless of the idea or issue just because they feel they need to be. They are Opposition, so they must Oppose, not matter what.
I actually like Rudd and Wayne Swann. I like Joe Hockey as well (but every time the announcer talks about him, I think of Snoopy). And I really like Penny Wong. I enjoyed the short-lived ABC production "Kitchen Cabinet." When I stopped complaining about the host trying (and failing) to be a political Nigella, I really enjoyed getting to know the politicians better.
My mother complains that I am an idealist voter. And after I got over being insulted, I realized she is right. I cast my vote for the person I think will do the job the best. But I cast my vote thinking that the best person for the job would perform the job the way I would were it mine. Maybe it's not the best way to decide on who I will vote for, but if I don't vote to pick the best people for the job, I am stuck playing the party games and I hate myself for that kind of underhanded, second guessing. I believe that there are good ideas coming from both sides of the aisle, if the politicians would just open their minds enough to listen.
Sorry, got a bit preachy there.
I didn't see it all as preachy. I never knew that about Julia (school principal). Maybe that's why she's so unlikable. No one really loves the school principal do they?
I really like Rudd too! I think he's a good leader but just got completely sideswiped by Julia and her motley crew. I can't get over the fact that apparently they knew Slipper was dodgy on some of his paperwork 18 months before the fact and still appointed him speaker. Not cool.
I like Penny Wong too! I sometimes feel for her. Her and her partner just had a child (?? or soon to have one) and the government/ party she's a member of doesn't support equal rights for them. Especially for the simple fact that Julia is an athetist. I could go on and on about how unfair I think it all is but I'll just leave at that. How terribly unfair!
Here's a good article

Yes, got it in one. I don't know if there's been one since you've been there, but every so often there will be a conscience vote and every so often a member will cross the floor. It is a huge huge deal when they do, because it pisses their party off no end, and they need their party to win preselection.
You'll show yourself a true idealist if you vote below the line.
