Talked to a physical therapist about Freddie

At Edith's speech appointment, I asked the physical therapist about what that doctor had said. The PT checked him out and said he was presenting normally and she completely disagreed with the dr's diagnosis. She also said she's never seen a 2 month old with such great control of his body, especially his head/neck. Just as I thought, my son is utterly perfect and is going to be a Supreme Court Justice. Or President.

  • woohooo!!

  • He's amazing, of course. Penny will date a younger, matoor man.

  • What did the doctor offically diagnose?

And you want Supreme Court Justice. Way easier on the body than presidency.

    awesome!
  • tell me about edith's speech appointments. What do they do? How do they get her to make the correct sound? Erin will be starting next month.

  • She didn't actually diagnose him...she said he was presenting signs of truncal hypotonia (which, when Googled is enough to scare the shiit out of you), and she recommended a full work up by a neurologist and a physical therapist. The other doctor he saw didn't mention it at all, and neither did the nurses at our agency.

Or both! A little Taft :-)
  • May I ask why Edith is seeing a speech therapist?  C has a "v" "B" issue.

Umm, we've already discussed this and Freddie and Juliana will be having an arranged marriage.

  • Angelaa, speech is awesome. Our ST does everything through play, and she sends home homework so we can work on stuff during the week. Her teachers have told me they're amazed at how quickly she's progressed. I love our ST. Having a good one makes all the difference. Edith doesn't have issues with sounds, but she drops syllables and says things like hockadog and mochacycle...we're trying to get her to slow down and pronounce words correctly.

I think for her age this is still normal.

It just blows my mind how they can get the kids to say the words. Like erin calls soap "bope" and I'll be giving her a bath and she'll say more bope more bope and I'll say. sssssssssoap and she;ll say back sssssssssssssss bope!

and i'm like how the fizzucka can I correct that. a) it's cute  b)it's hard!

    she can't do "s" and she can't do hard c. everything becomes a t or a b

  • Speech Therapy is wonderful if you have a good ST.  DD2 has been having weekly session for 2 months and we have noticed a marked increase in her language skills.  Don't worry!  Ask your therapist for homework if they don't offer it to you.  I always want to know what we can work on.

L does this same thing. Grandma - amma to her. So we were practicing guh guh grandma. "guh guh amma!"

I thought this was all normal though. How old is Erin? Why are you already doing speech therapy for this??

For us it was things like lable everything so she learns more words.  Talk to her constantly so she can hear the ebb and flow of a conversation.  Use simple terms to explain what you want and encourage her to ask for what she wants.

DD is very independent and she will get what she wants or needs instead of asking for it.  She has a hearing issue and probably a processing issue (still working on what or how) and she is a late talker.  Her speech is blowing up though and I attribute this to the ST as well as our constant talking and questioning her.

I try to make it as fun as possible and our ST is very comforting and fun.

  • remember her biting? her teachers hypothesized that she can't express herself well with speech so she just gets straight violent. I called our pedi who totes waived me on and said not to worry about anything until 30 months.

I kept watching videos of adam at erin's age and he's like talking in 3 or 4 words and she's barely stringing two together and is more comfortable kicking back and letting adam finish her sentences. or pointing, grunting and watching daddy slam down the goldfish crackers on her table. hahah

I called the regional center, they evaluated her for a good 90 minutes and said she should go weekly for 3 months

She understands everything. Has no hearing issues, she is just not speaking enough and when she does she isn't clear or isn't advanced enough

These aren't neccesarily contradictory. My baby is starting to understand that language can be used for communication and is already getting frustrated that she can't. She tries to use "sheese" and "A du" to convey entire world. Poor thing has years of frustration ahead.
  • Edith's homework is stuff like going to the grocery store and having her name things with longer names (raspberries, watermelon, strawberries, etc.) or having her say words like helicopter without dropping the middle syllables (hopter). We also work on proper pronouns and adding words to make full sentences ("he IS running" instead of "he running") and this week, we're working on who, what, when, where, why sentences. Some of it seems so stupid, but it's working and I feel like she's SO much less frustrated now that she's more easily understood.

Seriously, people. If your faith in humanity is destroyed because your parents told you there was a Santa Claus and as it turns out there is no Santa Claus, you are an ignorant, hypersensitive cry baby with absolutely zero perspective. - UnderwaterRhymes
