i need kitchen backsplash help!

we just had our old horrible white formica counters taken out, and  we had bianco romano granite put in, without any granite backsplash.  i want whatever we install  to go from the very bottom of the counter to the top of the cabinets.

anyway, the counters are fairly neutral-light.   we have oak cabinets that i would like to paint to be a sage cottageish color eventually, but we can live with them as is.  our floors are white tiles too, and are not going anywhere for awhile.

i love subway tile but i feel like it will be too much white, competing with the flooring, or am i off base here?  having a smaller decorative line of something (small squares?) running through the subway tiles would be ok too, we have fiestaware so i am not afraid of a punch of color here and there, i just want it to be not tooooo in your face.   does this make any sense?  i am not sure what to do!  help!

Re: i need kitchen backsplash help!

  • I did a little googling, and here are some links to look at for ideas. It looks to me like it is a fairly light granite, almost white with either gray splotches or streaks? I would probably stick with white if you are definitely going to paint the cabinets. Which i think would be fabulous. Perhaps a slightly darker shade 9same color card) on the lowers.

Anyway, I would do a white glass subway tile and a gray grout to pick up the gray in the granite.

This has white grout, I would rather have seen gray.

This has a strip of small black tiles inset, and the gray grout.

This has lots of options with your granite.

This is my favorite, first two pix show what I mean.

I just think if you are doing colored cabinets, and have fun bright dishware, simple would be your best bet. And down the road...not dated, easier to change decor around and eventually easier to sell.

I really like the way the subway tiles look with the slightly darker grout in the last link.

We have a white Ceasarstone countertop and white subway tile backsplash in our condo that we are selling right now. I'm not a fan of white kitchens but I actually think it looked pretty good together.

  • We have Kashmir White granite which is similar to Bianco Romano and went with Hampton Carrara from the Tile Shop.

I think white subway tile with light gray grout would look pretty with the sage painted cabinets too. It will contrast between the light gray/tan colors of the bianco romano and make the counters and painted cabinets stand out. I think painting the cabinets will be enough color that having white floors and white tile won't be too much. I'd probably avoid the decorative line of tile running through, but just a personal preference. To add a punch of color I'd just do a few well placed colorful accessories on the counters and maybe a washable rug with a fun pattern...less permanent :).
