Aussie girls again, a flying to US question

This is a straight up ignorant question, but I want to make sure I'm right:

When flying Australia to US you take off and land on the same day.

And US to Oz you skip one day entirely, so if you depart US on the 1st you'd get to Australia on the 3rd.

Is this correct?

I just checked some flights and that's how I understand it, but I think it's nuts that on the Oz to US flight you don't lose a day at all.

  • Yep. I booked flights for MIL to come over and help when the baby comes. She'll leave on a Thursday and get here early Saturday morning.

  • Exactly correct.

Australia to the US is the longest day of your life -- often you land before you take off.  I left Melbourne at 10:00 a.m. Friday and landed in LAX at 9:30 a.m Friday.

US to Australia is overnight -- leaving the west coast in the evening and arriving in the morning 2 days later.  I left LAX at about 6 p.m. Friday and landed in Melbourne about 9 a.m. on Sunday.

  • Yep, you are correct!

I flew home once on my birthday. It was the longest birthday I ever had, and the most boring.

  • It just sounds so crazy, I had to double check!

I'm not sure if it could be worse than Norway to Australia, however it really wasn't bad (probably due to the fact that my 12 hour flight was only 11 and I got 3 seats to myself).

  • Yes. And if you choose your flight very very carefully you can land before you take off.

I hope losing no time on the way to the US makes up for losing an entire day on the way back!
