Have you ever painted a wooden window frame?

I want to paint the frames white in the 3 upstairs bedrooms. We have never done this before. Any tips? I'm slowly going to replace all the doors to nicer quality white doors and freshen up the trim.

Re: Have you ever painted a wooden window frame?

  • I painted all the trim in my house including windows. I used a oil based primer and a latex paint, all sherwin Williams.. Make sure you wipe them down really well. Some people also recommend sanding them lightly with a low grit sand paper if your wood has a ton of varnish on them. I didn't do that and they turned out really good.  Also get a really good paint brush. I used the Purdy angled brush.

  • If the current paint is chipping, you'll want to use a scraper to loosen/remove the loose or chipping paint. Then sand down the chipped places to smooth them out and blend them into the remaining paint. Then paint. I would use a brush, assuming you have decorative grooves in the wood so you can get the paint into the grooves. Buy a decent brush because it will minimize brush lines on the wood. Remember if the current paint is oil-based you'll have to use oil-based again. Water-based paint won't stick to oil-based paint.
