A carseat question

We have a Graco Snugride 35. I just moved the straps up to the middle level, where they are sitting just at her shoulders. I am trying to do everything right when it comes to carseat safety, so I make sure the straps are snug, the chest piece is parallel to her armpits...but it seem like the straps are jabbing into her neck, and she screams every time we strap her in. We are really really careful when tightening her straps, but she's got a chubby neck. What can I do about this?

Re: A carseat question

  • Does it have fabric things that go over the straps?

  • It doesn't have them, but I could buy them. But are they safe? I read an article about carseat safety the other day that said you shouldn't use anything extra in your seat because it will alter the efficiency if you're in an accident and now I'm all paranoid.

    Yes, they are safe.

That is weird yours didn't come with them, we had the same carseat and it came with the straps.

Canada has different (stricter) carseat safety guidelines/rules, it might be why they didn't come with the straps.

  • I thought it might be a Canadian thing also so I checked and the pictures from Graco Canada show straps.  It does say some models though.

    This is true.

I think the warning applies more to things that add bulk, and quilted things like down that would compress in the event of an accident. Do you sew? You could make some. My aunt made me some as our seat does the same thing and they are really lightweight.

  • if you're worried about compression issues, maybe just whip some up out of something soft, but not bulky.  like terrycloth or velour.  didn't you and your mom sew up all the nursery bedding?  you can make a little circle of fabric with a velcro closure in about .45 seconds.

i used the fluffy ones that came with my carseat, and just tightened the hell out of the straps.

    kiss it, nest.
  • O has a huge neck so I had to start lifting up his neck/cheek roll, putting the strap under it then tightening. If you get the strap cover just make sure they still allow for the chest piece to be at armpit level. The kid I babysit has some animal ones & they are too big for his Chicco seat so the chest piece is at the bottom of his ribs.
