nfbr: Good ear plugs for work?

I work in an office setting, and at time, it is really difficult to concentrate from people talking around me and the music from the speakers.

Are there any good ear plugs you'd recommend? I know there are a lot out there, but not sure which ones work best.

I know this is a long shot, but any suggestions would be great.

Well I've never used them for work, but I like Hearos earplugs. I find them to be the most comfortable and they work pretty well.  Nothing is going to block out the noise completely, but they do a good job of drowning out a lot of noises.

You can get Hearos at Target.

  • You can get custom earplugs made at an audiologist, which will be most comfortable as they are molded for your ear canals.

Foam plugs are good, I just find them to be too big and they don't stay in well.

  • I don't use earplugs, but I do have these headphones which I love:

They basically function as earplugs.  I will use my headset when I am on conference calls and pop one of the headphones in my other ear to block out background noise.  The dual function is nice if you are interested in that.

  • My co-workers use the Bose noise cancelling headphones at work. Some of them don't even plug them into music, they just turn them on to use the noise cancellation.  I have some for flying and they won't cancel all noises but they're muffled and much quieter and would probably help.  Not sure if you would feel weird sporting headphones but that's just an option.  It's also a good way to signal that you're busy and don't want to be interrupted :)
