We have lived in our house 3.5 years. I do have an almost 3 year old who I was pregnant with when we moved in as a little bit of an excuse but I feel like I need to personalize my house some. I see things that I sort of like but we have a very open floorplan with lots of windows so I feel like I don't have a lot of places to hang things and where I can hang things, I always feel like it will look awkward. We don't have a lot of stores locally (kohls, bb&b, marshalls, tj maxx - and a home goods about 45 mins away which I need to take another trip to) but I'm willing to shop online.
yes, i seriously have ONE mirror up and no window coverings. I bought curtains but they needed hemmed and before we ever got that done we got a different couch and then they didn't match. the mantle is only 4 inches or so deep so I don't have a lot of room to work with there but I know it needs help too.
Here is my great room - it's longer and a tiny bit narrow so pics are a little weird. Sorry the pics were so huge. I did the thumbnails.
Re: Anyone want to help out the decorating impaired (part 1)?
It's a beautiful room! And you've got great foundational pieces like your big sectional. For me what is missing are all the accent pieces, including furniture and lighting. I think you need to think more broadly than just what stuff to hang on the walls. For example, I think a console table on the wall between the french doors and the foyer would be great, and you could put a lamp and pictures on that table. I see you have a coffee table, but how about another console table or end table either behind or to the side of the sectional? And could you define the space by the windows, perhaps with some chairs to give it a purpose?
I'm not trying to suggest you clutter this room, but it does seem like it is missing some tables and accent pieces. As for pictures, since you have a child, how about ordering some of your favorite pictures of him/her and pop them into a frame? Doing a series like this would personalize your space. Also think of adding some more warmth to all the gray in the form of patterns, pillows, etc. A couple of big baskets on the floor could also define things and provide storage.
I'm a big fan of 2" blinds on windows. Either faux wood or real wood. Then you can add curtains later, but I love blinds for some privacy.
