Bikram/heat yoga question!

I usually don't post on this board, but have a question I thought you guys could answer!

I am thinking of taking a few Bikram yoga classes, but I would have to take them after work (an 8pm class). This would be after working 12 hour shifts (and having been awake since 4:30am). I would of course hydrate throughout the day, and avoiding eating for a couple hours before the class. I guess I just don't want to overdo it and hate it, however the only studios are close to my work (and my commute is 40 minutes one way).

I know you can't really answer because you don't know how strenuous my job is, how I usually feel after work, etc...but if any of you have similar experiences or any thoughts to share that'd be great!

TIA!

Re: Bikram/heat yoga question!

  •  what I would be most concerned about is how that's going to possible mess with your sleep.  It sounds like you have to get up pretty early and for me, strenuous exercise close to my bedtime doesn't work.  But, you won't know until you try it and most studios have a free beginner class for first timers.
  • I exercise after work almost exclusively.

I find that workouts too late in the evening interfer with my ability to sleep (after about 8PM).  but I don't have that problem with bikram.  after a shower and a snack I go right to sleep/.

Good point - I would do it the first time on a day I didn't have to work the next day, so if I had any trouble sleeping I'd be able to rest the next day.

I'm really hoping I like it! I have been searching for a low impact exercise routine that I enjoy, and would love to finally find one! I swim as well, but only in the summer months. I have a history of chronic turf toe, and despite my best efforts with a podiatrist, it seems like it's just a pain we're going to have to work with rather than cure. Grr!

  • i think you'll do fine. you  might want to bring a change of clothes if you have a long ride home so you dont have to sit in sweaty clothes in the car.

as for the strenuous part-some of the movements are difficult but you only do to your own ability so dont worry about modifying anything until you get the hang of it. its perfectly ok. i have shoulder issues and it causes no problems for me. the only thing i can suggest is bring a water for the ride home and an asprin. sometimes when i get warm like that i get a headache.

have fun!! let us know how it goes!!

This is exactly what I was going to say. Yoga makes me relaxed and sleepy.

  • I also work 12 hours shifts (nurse) and do hot power yoga (so still heated but not as hot as Bikram). I personally do not do yoga after work because I'm too tired after running around for 12 hours and don't properly hydrate at work, but I do it on my days off during the week.

I would definitely recommend seeing if the yoga studio has a pass for a free first class or week to decide if that type of yoga is right for you. There are different types of yoga so if you decide Bikram is for you then great, and if not, there are so many other options out there for you to explore! Also, make sure you bring water and a towel.
