Dog losing weight (long)

Hi all, I'm an infrequent poster but hope someone can give me some ideas on what else I might be able to ask my vet.

I'm sorry this is so long. I've had my dog Venus (in my sig pic) for 13 years and she is my baby. I don't know a lot about medical issues and want to make sure I'm doing everything I can for her.

She is 14 but pretty active and seems to be good health for her age. Over the last year, she has lost about 5 lbs (she is 25 lbs now) despite eating almost twice as much food. A few months ago, her stools were soft/intermittent diarrhea and she was vomiting. The vet did lab work and her liver enzymes were high and she had protein in her liver. They put her on Denamarin for the liver and a probiotic for soft stools. They didn't have suggestions for vomiting but a little internet research prompted me to feed her a small bit before bed. This seems to have taken care of the vomiting.

The probiotic didn't help so I went to the nutritionist (I feed her home cooked food) who made a few changes to her diet and supplements. Her stools are firmer but still softish, no diarrhea thankfully. Yesterday, the vet re-checked her liver and urine. One liver value went up and one went down (can't remember which is which). There is still protein in her urine.

Tomorrow, I have an appointment for a urine protein creatinine ratio test to check for kidney disease and an ultrasound to check her liver, kidney and pancreas (she has had pancreatits twice) to see if anything shows up. The vet said they would do a biopsy if the radiologist sees anything concerning.

Is there anything else I should be asking the vet to check for?

Thank you and sorry this is so long.

Re: Dog losing weight (long)

  • Have her thyroid levels checked; also get her tested for diabetes.

Both can cause weight loss in a dog.
  • I don't know much about the medical aspect of it, but when we get in super thin dogs that need to gain weight we make them satin balls (google it for the recipe). But if there are liver/protein issues I would not feed them to her without checking with the vet to see if it's okay!
