Anyone ever started veggies from seeds?

I would ask this on the G&L board, but it doesn't look like there hasn't been a new post there (or reply for that matter!) in over 2 weeks.

Has anyone started their veggies from seed before?  Everything is sprouting, but now I have no idea how to "cut back all but the strongest" seed/sprout/leaf/etc.

  • I did it last year and I do not think I let them grow enough because most  of them died after we planted. I would let them grow a lot, and be really careful taking them out of the seed planter. So many just detached from the roots. Good Luck Big Smile

My former next door neighbor grew weed from seeds. That's all I got.

My grandparents used to have a rental house on their property.  The tenant worked for the Coast Guard and my grandparents would make me water his garden when he was "at sea" for a week or two at a time.  Good old Grandpa making sure the guy's weed didn't dry up. Landlord of the year. I think I was about 13 when I really noticed what I had been tending all those summers.

  • I have. I started sweet pea from seed last year in the little pots. I picked the fattest one in each pod and then gently pulled out the others. It helps if you water the hell out of them before pulling.

I started from seed in the ground this year, peas, carrots, green beans, and spinach. I didn't want to because I'm oddly attached to every sprout but I finally sucked it up and thinned them out. Again, I watered everything, let the water soak in and then gently tugged the runt sprouts.

When you transfer them, you'll want to soak them through first before attempting to move them over. Plant the whole cell.

Sweetpeas are my absolute favorite. I can't grow them here though, not enough sun.

Yep, zip!  And really, it was on Vancouver Island, so it's a safe bet every second garden around had some growing.

  • When you're ready to thin, you can just take the stem b/w your forefinger and thumb and pinch it with your nail.  That removes it easily without damaging the ones you want to keep.

Just an FYI, too...depending on what you are starting, it  might be a bit too late.  Tomatoes and peppers, for instance, won't get large enough to grow this season.  If it's something like cukes, squash, etc., you're fine.
