Would it be confusing to set up pee pads inside AND take her outside?

    Yes, don't do pee pads.

How old is puppy? If between 8-15 weeks every 20 minutes is good. A young puppy can only hold it for 15-20 minutes after drinking water. On average a puppy can hold it (we're talking in a crate) 1 hour for every month they are. So a 12 week old puppy should only be in a crate maximum 3 hours at a time. We would get up in the middle of the night to let the puppy out, in some ways it's like having a baby.

I highly recommend crate training. Crate training doesn't mean you have to use a crate for the rest of their lives or crate them forever when you leave for the day. I've done puppies both ways; crate training and not crate training. The puppy that we didn't crate train took nearly a year to be 100% potty trained. The next week, that we crate trained, was 95% trained at 16 weeks. When done properly, it works! A crate isn't a bad place for a dog to be, it's a safe place and is their "den".

  • What kind of dog is it? Smaller dogs have smaller bladders.

  • Don't use pee pee pads.  Unless you want to teach your dog to *** in your house.  The puppy can only hold it for as many months is the puppy is. If the puppy is 8 weeks old it can hold it for 2 hours.  We crate trained our dogs and it was the best decision ever.

  • We took the dogs out every 30 minutes or so when we were home and rewarded with treats. They were potty trained in no time

  • Seriously, with my minpin I put a cat collar on her with a bell. It allowed me to hear her when she moved and I would take her outside.

Basically anytime she starts to get up and move around. It's a PITA, but it worked

  • You're welcomed! I hope training your puppy wasn't as much of a PITA as training my Minpin. I'm seriously surprised we both came out alive.

    Good Luck!

ETA: and reward her when she does go potty! I swear that was the magic trick with Lily!

  • I also highly, highly, highly recommend crate training.  The dog will feel safer and happier with it's own place.

  • I would take them out as often as possible.  They just pee everywhere.  I did manage to house train a dog whilst living in a 6 floor walk up.  It's very doable.

  • Every 30 seconds, roughly. ;) in reality, every 30 minutes during the day, and any time they are wandering and sniffing.

  • 30 mins after every meal, withing 10 mins of waking up, even from naps, after EVERYTIME the puppy stops playing, all PPs are correct, puppy can only hold it for as many months as it is old.

No pee pads. Do NOT scold the pup if it pees inside, as soon as your see or hear the pee take pup outside to finish. Clean up pee with natures miracle, can find it online. If your pup pees inside get mad at yourself..

I hung a bell of the back door (the door leading to my pups pee area).. Everytime we went out to pee I ring the bell, pup would go out and pee and then he'd get a cookie for peeing. Once we got the pee outside part down he got a cookie if he rung the bell then we went out to pee, then he got another cookie and back in we go.

Make sure you go Out to pee with pup.. This  is tol instill good bsckyard manners.. No messing around, no barking.. Outside to do Business then back in.
