wireless internet??

My husband and I want to get wireless internet in our new house.  We are unsure if we should buy a router or just get regular wireless internet.  We only have a laptop.  What wireless internet provider do you use??  I have looked into TDS and Comcast.

 TIA!

Re: wireless internet??

  • Don't the other companies just use a router in your house, but it's theirs?  When I had Comcast, I think that they set it up with a wireless router (that was cheap and stunk) and we just ended up buying our own router.

I might not be the best person to ask about this, but that's what I remember.

  • Hey there, Mrs. Darah's DH here!

Couple things:  Unless you're using your cell phone to access the net, all home internet is wired.  Comcast, FIOS, whatever.

The wireless router you use in your house lets wireless devices connect to IT (the router), and then the router organizes and sends those signals up through the wired internet connection (your modem) out to Comcast or whoever.  So you can get any internet provider you want, but you need to buy a wireless router to allow people to get on to that connection wirelessly.

Here's a diagram of how a home network works (please don't be jealous of my MS Paint skill):

You get a modem box from the internet provider and they hook it up to the cable (the same cable that goes to your TV - you can do this yourself if you like).  Now the modem has a single plug in it for a computer.  You COULD plug your computer directly into the modem and be all done, but this kinda sucks for a number of reasons.  Many people have more than one computer and/or want wireless access in their house.  Plus your computer is now naked to the internet!  (eep)  This is where routers come in.

Instead of plugging a computer into the modem, buy a router and plug THAT into the modem (I very strongly recommend Linksys brand).  Routers are devices that have around 4 spots for people to plug their computers into to get internet access.  The router will now manage everyone who's plugged into it to allow all the connected computers to reach the modem and go out to the internet.  Additionally, if you have bought a router that supports wireless connections, you'll be able to connect to the router wirelessly and then get out to the internet normally.

It's not usually a cakewalk setting up the wireless access part, so if you have any trouble with that, please let me know.  And I'm definitely available if you have any other questions!  Just let Heather know.

  • Thank you so much.  That helped a lot!
