Minimum wage

I just heard on the news they raised the minimum wage here to $10.25/hr. I'm surprised and I feel old considering it increases by mere cents every year and it was $5.15 when I had my first job.

It seems like a good wage though, for a student or someone starting out.

Re: Minimum wage

  • Wow, that's crazy.  That's what I made at my first temp job after college!

Agreed. A single parent making minimum wage at 40 hours per week (no overtime) and two kids has a gross annual income of 21K a year.

Federal poverty line for the contiguous states and DC for a family of three is 19K a year.

    Scary.

  • That's where ours is, since last year I think.

I'm not sure, $10 I think. It's the second highest in the country.

And no, this isn't enough for a family to live on. I think our poverty line is similar, around 20k.

well, actually, i would say that your $7.25 is better, if we are taking into consideration relative prices [of goods, services, etc] between the US and canada.

Ah yes, that would make sense. I'm not up on who all of the Nesties from the Great White North are yet :)

my parents bought all of my big stuff and they buy 99% of his clothing.  (lol, are you shocked?).

as for other items -- i buy most of his toys and things (jumper, playmat, etc) secondhand.

for baby stuff like diapers and formula, i buy all that at wal-mart and costco.  wal-mart prices are great and we often stock up when things are on sale.

but if my situation was different - if i had to buy all of his stuff, i would probably get the furniture and the bigger stuff, and clothes in the US b/c it is significantly cheaper.

We have a really great consignment store here for toys etc. which is great. Btwn grandma and all her aunties (read: friends without kids yet!) she is spoiled for clothing.

Its amazing though, the difference in price there for things like those fruit pouches and cheddar bunnies etc. plus, it's just another excuse to cross the border and go shopping.

  • Not so great when you own a company full of min wage employees. While prices have only risen 5% (due to the economy), employee cost has doubled. Woot. F'n woot.

Of course not, but minimum wage is never a good wage for a family. $10 is much better than any state. Washington is highest at $9.  Here (SF) it was just raised to $10.24.

    Here is a good chart:

What do your employees do that you feel most of them merit less than the mandated minimum wage?
  • Yea but servers and wait staff still only get $9.00 due to "potential earnings" through tips. Nice BC. Way to go.

I know! I didn't realize this, I was just talking to someone about that. It was only $8 until recently. Considering the shifts are pretty short, its total bullshiit. Also, we have some of the HCOL in the country in parts of B.C so its not like minimum wage workers are making off like bandits or something.

I'm wondering if her high employee costs are due to turnover from paying them a shiitty wage.

  • Min wage isn't intended to be what a family can live on. It's the starting point for wages and should mostly be used to pay for jobs such as entry level fast food, newpaper delivery etc. It's a supply and demand economy, if you are paying min wage you are getting people who have no skills established to be able to demand more pay for better work. Raising the min wage isn't going to help most working families. There are people who have families making min wage, but I don't believe it's the norm.

  • Where I live - HCOL area - full time minimum wage would not sustain one adult (living alone, without roomates of any sort), for rent, utilities (especially hydro these days...), FOOD and the necessities to live like toilitries, household goods and cleanign supplies. If you add a paid off beater vehicle and gas and insurance that person is officially living beyong their means, thats not taking itno account Cell phone, more then basic pluged into the jack cable, entertainment fund and CLOTHES. It is insane the cost of living here and the wages earned.

Isn't she in Indiana? ($7.25/hour) It was the "company full of minimum wage employees" that stuck in my craw.  Sure, there are some entry level jobs where minimum wage might be appropriate. However, you would hope there would raises for being a good employee and staying with the job, plus room for advancement out of those entry level positions.
