I'm going to need a map of the real vs. not real NJ haha. It's taken me this long to learn 31 and 78. (the relevant roads I need to know up there.)
I love Jersey so much. I know this makes a weirdo but I have a sentimental adoration for the state of my birth. I went back for the first time in ten years the summer before last and let me tell you, I nearly cried when I hit the New Jersey turnpike.

Surely there is a classification of mental illness that explains this phenomenon, yes??
I would give my right eye to move back to Jersey, but only if it came with the type of income that could handle the jacked up taxes there of course.

Huge New Jersey fan here. I think the north end of the NJ Turnpike is actually exciting and somehow pleasing to my eye. I get amazed at all of that industry, plus I like containers because of my past job. I think about how it used to be swampland and I wax proud about American industry and the men who built it all with their hands.
Plus I love most of the Jersey Shore, including Seaside - I used to cocktail waitress in Seaside Heights, long ago and I love the log flume on their boardwalk.
Plus the Pinelands and Atlantic City weirdness.
And Bruce Springsteen.
And sweetday, of course.

We're going down the shore this weekend, and will definitely be hitting up the Joe Canal's on the way.

My Trader Joe's sells liquor. I have no idea how they sell it, but they do. This is Mercer county.
And....Lauren.... your list was missing the most important thing about NJ:
Pizza
You didn't mention Wawa. Or all the malls. Or Central Jersey which I love. It just feels fresh and green and pretty and gah, I sound like a moron but seriously, my childhood is there. Walking to the pool, growing stuff, tomato stands, the smell of spring and fall, apple picking, all the cool places I went on field trips as a child. All the historical sites like the grist mill my school bus passed daily that was a stop on the underground railroad. Menlo Park, old Victorian houses, 4th of July parades and fireworks, etc
Although admittedly, some of my favorite stuff isn't Jersey at all but the close proximity to other stuff like hiking the Delaware Water Gap, being close to Philly and NYC.

I just wish I lived closer to the beach like I did as a kid. Our dream is to move to a shore town and have a boat in our backyard and be able to walk to the beach.
I make fun of NJ a lot but I do it all in good fun. Things I like about NJ:
- The gas prices
- Atlantic City
- Newark Airport is like 20 minutes from us
- Springsteen and Bon Jovi, duh
- The Giants
- Many neighborhoods are actually quite lovely
DH wants to move there, but I don't want to pay even more in property taxes, public transportation, gas (since DH would have to drive a longer distance than he does now to work), tolls, etc. I also don't want to re-learn how to drive and you'd kind of have to drive anywhere based on the areas we'd consider moving to.

NJ is awesome to me but likely not for any of the reasons you all mention. If you think Hunterdon is rural....try Sussex County. Haha.
I do miss it there. Most people don't believe that a place like Sussex Cty exists in NJ, but it does. The Garden State is a joke to most people, but get yourself to a patch of earth to till and you'll understand as soon as you see what's underneath. The soil there is gardeners paradise and of course the produce reflects that. There's nothing, nowhere, like Jersey corn, and I would fight that fact to my grave.
Also summers in Stone Harbor. That's a happy place. We're going for a week at the end of the summer--I can't wait to show my baby all my favorite places there
I still hold on to the probably naive hope that our ridiculous liquor laws will be repealed.
New Jersey has a Six Flags and Irish Weekend, so NJ = awesome.
I have a client in Sussex and I'm up there fairly often. OMFG. I feel like I am in another state for sure.

Its another world, indeed! At least compared to the rest of NJ.
the County. I drive up to Newton from central NJ and its a different world.
I love NJ and one of the things I love about it is that most of the country doesn't like it (or thinks they wouldn't)... which is good b/c we haev enough people here- i don't want more moving here
and so much of NJ is like Sussex - it's amazing how MUCH of NJ has a lot of NOTHING.... we're the most densely populated state - yet, it's all in specific areas and the rest of the state is farms, forests, etc.
I drove up to Blairstown the other day (to drop off a baby rabbit my neighbor's dog attacked, to a woman who rehabilitates them).... it's so beautiful there -- rolling hills, farms, so NOT what anyone thinks of NJ.
I love that we have THAT kind of areas just 40 minutes from my busy area... we have Manhattan just 45 min from my suburban area... mountains to ski at about 40 minutes away... the shore about an hour away.... everything is here. Yup- it costs a lot, but I'm OK with that. I have lived in low COL areas in other states- and I pick NJ to stay
best pizza, chinese food, subs.... BYOB restaurants everywhere... great malls... history and culture... the list goes on and on.
there's a reason tons of bazillionaires live in this state in their huge houses that I drive by every day
Wait what? I grew up in nj and the stores do sell liquor. The trader joes in Westfield most certainly does.
